Discus$es farm problems
Mrs. Joe Walker
Correspondent
A discussion of farm problems,
with all members participating,
was conducted by the convener of
the Agriculture, and Canadian
Industries committee, Mrs. Jack
Nicholson, when the Women's
Institute met on Wednesday of
last week.
Several interesting questions
arose from the discussion, such
as: We farmers have the name of
being complainers; do you think
we have just cause to complain or
do you think we complain at all?;
How does the Women's Institute
help farm women?
The ladies cited many pleasant
things about farm life and were
also urged to mention drawbacks
of farm life, if any.
Mrs. Carl Johnston opened her
home for the meeting which
began with the Ode and Mary
Stewart Collect. President Mrs.
Jim Armstrong welcoined mem-
bers and a guest. The minutes,
treasurer's report and a thank you
note were read by Mrs. Bill
Peacock, who also discussed
some business with the group.
The cookbooks compiled by the
WI are selling very well.
The 4-H training school for the
project "Cereal Shelf" will be
held in Gorrie August 23 and 24
and in Wingham, August 24 and
25 from 10 until 4 o'clock each
day.
Mrs. Alex MacTavish, Mrs.
Nicholson, Mrs. Armstrong and
Mrs. Murray Jenkins were named
a committee to set up the fall fair
exhibit in Howick Arena. The fair
will be held October 1 and 2.
Roll call was answered by
everyone bringing something
grown, sewn or made. The
articles were then auctioned to
the highest bidder. Mrs. John-
ston read two poems "The
Newborn Calf" and "Farming."
Mrs. Armstrong thanked all
who had taken part in the meeting
and lunch was served by the
hostess assisted by Mrs. Nichol-
son, Mrs. Jenkins and Mrs.
Graham Campbell.
The 4-H Homemaking Club
girls and leaders will be present
at the next meeting, August 11 at
2 o'clock. The roll call, will be for
each member to display her craft.
Mrs. Soren Andersen will be
hostess.
