Heritage tour to visit several Seaforth houses

Tickets are on sale now for
Heritage Tours of old houses and
buildings in four Huron
co minunities.
Seaforth's tour is Sa turday
and Sunday, July 17 and 18 and
tickets for it and for tours in
Clinton this week end, Bayfield on
July 28 and 29 and the Goderich
area on August 14 and 15 are
available at The Huron
Expositor. Tickets are priced at
2, including tea following the'
tour and there's a special rate of
$10 for tickets on all four tours.
On Saturday participants in the ,
.Seaforth tour will visit a log
house, moved from Tuckersmiith
township and restored as a home
by Mr. , and Mrs. Norman
MacLean, Egmondville.
On Main Street Sills Hardware,
built'in 1869, and Camino's Opera
Hall, built in 1877, which still has
its original stage curtain will be
visited. Both Saturday and
Sunday the tour will drive down
John Street, which has several
houses of architectural and
historic interest to the white
frame St. Thomas Anglican
Church, the first permanent
church in Seaforth, built in 1863.
Restoration work is in p rogress
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul
Carroll, built in 1875, which will
be visited on Goderich St. West.
The tour will continue through
Harpurhey, which was settled
many years before Seaforth and
return, to the Van. Egmond house,
passing some early Tuckersmith
houses.
Sunday's tour will visit the
Tuckersmith home of Mr. and
Mrs. Gerald Martene, a unique
brick cottage that was the home
and studio of artist William
Cresswell, who died there in
1888. It will continue up the road
to Castramont, home of MP
James Dickson from 1834
Continuing around the five mile
block, to Harpurhey,, the tour will
stop at the brick cottage of Mr,
and Mrs. Keith Sharp, built in
1855 by bailiff, auctioneer, and
shoe maker, Joseph P. Brine.
Driving back into Seaforth, the
tour will stop at the lar ge brick
home built by merchant
B.B.Gunn in 1894 and owned by
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Spittal and
at the arge white painted brick
home of Dr. and Mrs. Rodger
Whitman, built in the 1860's.
