Despite the national economic situation, it appears that in this area, fewer students are unemployed this summer than last summer. The Listowel Canada Manpower Centre for Students which serves the area bounded by the communities of Arthur, Wingham, Mount Forest, arid Monkton, reports that fewer applications for employment have been received this summer, and that about sixty percent more students have been placed in summer employment through the Listowel office. Chic proclamations by most communities, and an advertising campaign during "Hire a Student Week", June 14 - 19, were responsible for increasing public awareness of the availability of student workers. As a result, many students already have employment for at least part of the summer . Students are working in just about every sort of job imaginable. Newspaper correspondents, ceramic makers, janitors, life guards, and nurse's aides are just a few of the positions filled this summer by studht employees. Many industrial and commercial employers have hired students, but small businessmen, farmers, and home owners who need temporary help during the summer months, have been the biggest employers of students so far. In fact, so many students already have summer work that there is shortage of older male students to fill some of the jobs which are currently available in various parts of the area. The students who seem to • be experiencing greatest difficulty in finding employment are males under 16 years of age and females of all ages. While there is improvement in the area as a whole, in communities on the- periphery of the Maripower area, (Mount Forest, Arthur, Monkton, and Brussels), many students without transportation are still unemployed. Students who are looking for summer work should visit the Canada Manpower Centre for Students in Listowel for advice on employment opportunities in the area. One charge was laid under the Criminal Code. During • the week, June 28-July4 there were ninemotor vehicle collisions which caused an estimated $6025 in property damage and injuries to three persons. On Monday June 28 Michael W. Gulutzen of R.R.#2, Brussels was injured at Lot 24, Con. 16, Grey Township when he was caught between a truck and a silo. On Friday, July 2, Charlene. M. Reid of Varna was injured, in a singel car accident on Concession 10-11, west of #4 highway, Turnberry Township. On Sunday, July 4, Margaret L Bernard was injured in a single car accident on Concession Road 6-7, east of sideroad 20-21, Morris Township when the vehicle she was driving left the roadway, entered the north ditch and struck a post. During the past week, there have been three separate complaints in the Wingham O.P.P. area wherein a child has been wounded as a result of a shot fired from a pellet gun. A .pellet gun falls within the Criminal Code definition of a firearm. The Code creates a criminal offence for the adult who gives, lends or in any way allows a person under sixteen years of age to be in possession of a firearm. How does it feel to be out on the'street?
