The Brussels Post, 1976-07-07, Page 8S.D.H.S. students are going to
have a slightly longer school day
when they start back in Septem-
ber, but principal Bruce Shaw
hopes the school's atmosphere
will be more relaxed and that
students day to day work load will
be reduced.
The school has gotten approval
from the Huron County Board of
Education to change from 35
minute to 70 minute instructional
periods. "It will slow the pace. A
student will have to worry about
doing homework for four, instead
of eight classes a day," says Mr.
Shaw. He hopes the longer
classes will allow more in depth
work by the students and more
original thinking and innovative
teaching.

Promise
more $
for arenas
Communities faced with the
problem of how to repair or
replace unsafe arenas have been
offered a high level of support by
the Ontario Government, a PC
goveimment caucus news release
says this week.
Robert Welch, Minister of
Culture and Recreation has
announced the Ontario
government's financial aid plan.
The government will pay 25
percent of repairs up to $75,000.
Further aid up to 25 percent more
in a matching grant to be given
any community which raises up to
25 percent of the cost will come
from' Wintario funds.
Monies raised by the counties
will be tax deductable and all
labour and donations of material
will be included as part of the
communities' contribution. A
total of 75 percent will be covered
by the government and counties,
the remaining 25 percent can be
debentured.
Inspectors will not be forcing
the closing of arenas if they only
need repairs and do not remain
open under unacceptable snow
conditions.
On the lighter side, arenaS in
the province with unsafe roofs
could easily follow the example of
Brighton, the town that took the
roof off theit arena.
