5. Then dip youf wool into cold
water and let it dry.
After this has been done then it
is ready for the spinning wheel.
I thought that it was a most
enjoyable morning and that we
should give thanks to Mr. Scott
and Mrs. Slotegraaf for letting us
have Pioneer Day.

Successful Pioneer Day
presented by Gr. 7 class
Students at Brussels Public
School spent some of their last
days in the classroom learning
how their pioneer ancestors lived.
All students participated in
special classroom activities and
learned pioneer skills.
A Look at It All!
The pupils froM Kindergarten
to Gr. 3 travelled through the
pioneer times displayed by Gr. 7.
In the Bread making group, the
pupils were allowed to taste, feel
and try the bread made by the
pioneers. of grade 7.
From here they travelled to
another aspect of pioneer days
that of candle making. The
tiresome job of dipping in the
candle wick and out again, in
order to form a candle that would
be used for light in earlier times.
Next came 3 charming young
ladies who displayed a variety of
knits, quilts and how those 12"
needles click together with the
never-ending yarn to make
clothes foi- the hardy winters.
But to add a little color tb '
pioneer clothing the travellers
saw 2 different dyes that could be
`used onion skins and raspberries.
`And our demonstrators included
in their display the carding of
sheeps wool.
As the pupils proceeded to the
various displays oh's & awe's
continued.
In continuation of the pioneer
village was the Antique Shop - to
display the artifacts that , were
used in pioneer times.
From there they saw the
primitive method of making.
butter, Shake, shake all day long
for some butter that makes us
strong.
Chips scattered here and there'
was the result of some industrious'
wood carvers. The .boys passing
through this section were quite
interested in the various tools and'
equipment used to carve wood.
Dirt comes cleaner with the
washer. Women was the title fot
the young maidens scrubbing
clothes on washboards. Some of,
the youug'uns tried this but
decided they wouldn't like to do
their washing this way.
, We wish to thank all the pupils
and' teachers that help 'take our
Pioneer Day a success.
Thanks - Grade 7.
Making Butter
Last Thursd a.
Seven'
at Grade
s pioneer day Ken CouSins,
John Dorsch and tors Elliott were
making butter. Ken and John
shook the cream until' it was solid
and Lori ran the water over the
already-made butter.
The children from. Grades
Kindergarten to three came in to
watch us and to taste the butter.
Most of them liked it.
'it was fun to do it for a day but I
wouldn't want 'to have to do it
every day.
Paul Nichol.
Candle Dipping
On Thursday our group of three
had great fun trying to dip
candles. It takes a long time and
is not as easy as it looks but I
' think it was well worth the while.
Grades kindergarten to grade 3
visited us and I think they had a
great time. '

- Washing on a Washboard
Gee! I sure am glad we have
washing machines nowadays. For
we at Brussels, Public School
found hoed hard it was for Great
Grandma to wash clothes years
ago with • a washboard. Karen
Johnston, Karen McLean, Cathy
Cooney and I. (Cathy Sholdice)
were involved in a group to show
Gr. Kindergarten to Gr. 3 how to
wash on a washboard, on
,``Pioneer Day" ., We gave anyone
whO came to tour our classroom a
chance to try it. Some thought it
was fun and others thought it was
a non satisfying job.

Bread Making •
Thursday,' June 3, Grade 7
had a Pioneer Day. On the
Pioneer Day there were 2 groups
of bread makers. I was in one
group. On Monday the bread
groups made 4 loaves of bread, 2
by each group. When the grades
came through they got a taste of
the homemade bread. Most of
them liked it. Grade 3's liked it so
much they went through Pioneer
Day' twice. As they were going
through they also got to help
knead the dough. When the
morning was over we all agreed
that it was quite a Success.
