Texas size eggs
I told you I'd been wandering around in this
world without one egg in my basket.
Remember? It was all my neighbor Ed's fault.
He gave up chicken ranching and moved into
town. And that left me destitute --without a
decent egg on my, plate.
I knew another neighbor sold eggs. Only he
lived farther away -- a whole mile up in the
village and here I am in the suburbs of
Brodhagen. But it was worth a try. To see if
Harvey Ahrens could fill my egg basket.
I sent my girls up to his place to see what
Harvey could do about it.
And he did plenty.
He put in three dozen of the biggest
whoppers I ever did see, Real Texas size eggs,
If I knew Harvey didn't live in Ontario, I'd say
he lived in Texas: Because this man belileves
in size. His chickens produce spectaculars.
Real live extravaganzas.
I started to wonder if Harvey slipped in a
few goose eggs --just to niake his chickens
look good.
But no. They were -all chicken hen eggs with
pure white shells. And just to prove his
chickens could be different, he added hi one
big brown egg, I think he was trying to tell me
sot ething. I could have it either Way -- white
or brown,
I was really inipressed with that kind of
chicken flair,
And Harvey sent along thelword with my
girls, 'Tell your dad We have the best eggs
ever,"
Harvey's a smart man. He'd read My Amen
column about Ed's eggs. He knew he was up
to some stiff competition. He knew I'd written
ed's eggs were; the greatest. And I'm a man of
my word. I don't pass out superlatives- lightly,
I stand on my word. Ed's are bests.
'I saw through Harvey's plan right away, he
wanted to dazzle me. To stagger me with his
goose sized eggs.
And he did alright. I knew Ed's eggs could
never match up to this kind of size.
But I wouldn't let my head be turned by this
first few
I know how it goes. First big effort: Great
big splash. With Harvey picking out for me
the very biggest. Choosing all the exceptions.
The eXceptional eggs -- not his ordinary
run-of-the-mill.
I know how it goes. Sample products. Test
products, The first runs are' the stunning
samples — just to win me over.
But I kept my head. I can turn pretty hard
boiled myself. None of this old softie stuff.
Melting at the first sight of king sized eggs. I
Wasn't going to be that easily
impressed. I wasn't going to ,admit a thing.
Because the big question is: Can Harvey's
chickens keep it up? Can they deliver Texas
size eggs Week after week after week?
Now, mind you, Harvey, I admitted right off
you raise the biggest eggs I've ever seen, 'kit
the best?*
I let six or Seven dozen cross my breakfast
plate before I'd let on anything. And now
three weeks later, I'm ready to concede,
Yes, Harvey, your eggs are as tasty as they
are. big,
No Wonder you have something to crow
about. You've got quite a flock of hens in you,
roost.

One area, one trustee
All good things must come to an end. That may be
the way some Huron County school board trustees
feel as they face the proSpect of representing anew
areas and of fighting for their school board seats in
unfamiliar territory-come the December elections if
county council realigns the school electoral
boundaries.
An increase in the Separate School population in
the county means that separate supporters will gain
one more member on the 16 member board of
education. Public school supporters will be giving up
one seat on the board and just where that seat is to
come from is the controversial question at county
council.
County council has the power to realign the school
election boundaries and their executive committee
recommended getting that seat by changing school
boundaries so that most areas would represented by.
just one trustee. Many larger groupings ottowns and
townships are now represented by two trustees.
A vote on these proposed changes was postponed
till next month' at county council. it's a touching
question. As one deputy reeve said, some trustees
"will have to fight for their seat and under the old
waylhey probably wouldn't." •
Sitting trustees may very well have to fight the
next school board election*, but that should just serve
to give us a better school board, with representatives
who've worked harder, to win their ,seats.
Making one member definitely reSponsible for one
area shduld make a better school board too. Seaforth,
for example would join Hullett and McKillop in
electing one trustee, a more logical arrangement
than what we have now with two trustees
representing all of Seaforth, Bayfield, Tuckersmith
and Stanley. •
Some of the board of education's- trustees are as
responsive to their area's voters as they could
possibly be. These trustees have nothing to fear from
a realigned school district.
Only the trustees who takelhe voters for granted.
and have perhaps been a little lax in representing
their area's interests on the board of education have
anything to worry about.
The one trustee, one district proposal Can only give
us a stronger and more responsive school board.
County council shouldn't hesitate to follow their
executive committee's suggestion.

Setting the record: straight
Quite probably his family may have already corrected a emt,
of facts in your recent item on Bert. Black but here they are.
Bert must have died over 10 years ago as it occurred while I
Was still at work and I aril retired 9 years.
After his return front the war he took a university course i n
ForeStry and gradnated. Not long after he developed liver
disease and after an illness of some duration he died in
Sunnybrook Hospital ending the premising career of a fine young
man who had survived several tours of duty as a fighter pilot with
a commendable, efficiency.
I cannot vouch for the accuracy Of the report but oh his return
from overseas it was reported he had the unnerving experience
On One of his tours of seeing Louis 'Russell shot down in 4 dog
fight over France.
Secondly', Bert did n of marry Miss Cook, That was his brother
Willie who also taught fOr a year in Brussels High Scheel,
It was a great grief to his many- friends who knew and admired
Bert when at High School and University to see him cut down by
a very insiduous disease at a young age.
Yours truly
