BRUSSELS post, iviAY 12, 1976 WI officers study communication .R The 28th Annual Officer's Conference of the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario gathered on the campus of University of Waterloo, May 4, 5 and 6. 450 delegates'gathered in the Theatre of the A rts, to be welcomed by the Provincial president, Mrs. Herb Maluske, Chesley. Musical interludes and sing-songs were led by Mrs. Hugh Baird and Mrs. Wm. Stone, pianist, from the Central (Toronto) Area W.I. during the conference. Mrs. Austin Zoeller, Editor of Home and Country, addressed the gathering on "Women in our World", This is not about the Great 'women whose names are recorded in history, nor the group that are household names, but the Beigrave lady at WI meeting Mrs. Lewis Stonehouse Correspondent Mrs. Leonard James, a dele- gate of Belgrave Women's Insti- tute and Mrs. Norman Coultes representing the Huron West District, attended the 28th. Offi- cers Conference of the Federated Women's Institute of Ontario at University of Waterloo last week. The Officers Conference was not a holiday but a learning experience and time of enjoyable fellowship for nearly 500 dele- gates from all across Ontario. Plan Meeting The May meeting of the Belgrave Women's Institute will be held Tuesday, May 18 at 8:15 p.m. in the Belgrave W.I. Hall. Mrs. Leonard James is convener for this Canadian Industries meeting and guest speaker will be Bill Robinson telling about the making of maple syrup. There will be an exchange of flower slips and bulbs. Lunch committee is Mrs. Walter. Scott, Mrs. Ross Taylor and Mrs. Jesse Wheeler. Four Tables in Play Mrs. Ella Johnston and Cecil Wheeler were the holders for high score when the regular euchre party was held in the Belgrave Community Centre last Wednesday evening. Four tables were in play: Prizes Lot low score went to Mrs. Clarence Hanna and Clarence Hanna. Novelty prizes were awarded ,to Mrs. Victor Young- blut and Jim. Coultes. Belgrave U.C.W. Are Guests Last Wednesday evening, the Belgrave U,C.W. were invited to Whitechurch U.C.W. Thankoffer- ing meeting. Miss Colleen Farrier of Long Branch showed her slides of Kenya, Africa, where she visited for 3 weeks last summer. She also displayed many articles which she brought home with her. Colleen was a chosen delegate last year from Toronto Presbytery in the United Church 50th Anni- versary youth exchange project: Coleen is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carman Farrier of Long Branch, Friends arid neighbours of Mrs.. Amelia Brown are sorry to hear of her misfortune. Mrs. Brown is now a patient in Listowel Memorial Hospital. We wish her a speedy recovery. Mrs, Beatrice Cardiff of Brussels and Danny Thompson of Goderich spent the weekend with Mr, and Mrs. Bert Johnston. For quite some time now we have been aware that communications encompass a great deal more than a speaker, or a writer, who shares an idea with someone content to sit still, & listen or read, There are six ways to improve communications. What y ou mean to say. What you actually say. What the Other person hears, What the other person thinks he hears. What the other person says, What you think the other person says. May we always be able to communicate with a sincere motive. Miss. Helen McKereher, who was attending the last Officer Conference in her official capacity as Director of Home Economics, before retirement, was presented with a gift, on behalf of all present by Mrs.Russell,Campbell, the newly. appointed Officer's Conference secretary. Discussion group leaders were introduced; Branch Presidents, Mrs. Harvey Noblitt, chairman; Mrs. Delmar Smythe and Mrs. Keith Hiepleh; Public Relations Officers, Mrs. Harvey Houston, chairman; Mrs. Harry Smith and Mrs. Donald MacLachlan. Members at large, Mrs. Rebecca Johnson, chairman; Mrs.E. H.. Urstadt, Mrs. Orval Jordan and Mrs. Norman Tuck. Dr. J. C. Rennie, Executive Director, Educations and Research, told delegates of research in Ontario and across. Canada. Many production, processing and marketing systems, considered normal procedure, were merely in research not many years ago. We fail to appreciate the time element involved in developing new varieties of grain, fruits and vegetables.
