Too often they find more than they'd bar-' gained for because the attic isn't properly insulated with at least 6 inches of R-19 fiber ghiss insulation, ' As a result, they're wasting up to 30% ,Of the energy used to heat and cool their homes. Exploring attic key to reduced utility. bills Today's. nostalgia trend has provided the spark in many households for re- ducing utility bills. Home- owners exploring old trunks and boxes for yes- terday's treasures have begun to notice that there's often something missing altogether in the attic — "Twenty years ago, it was relatively inexpensive to use as much gas or oil as we needed to heat our homes comfortably," says Sharon Kay Ritchie, di- rector of the Home Insti- tute for Certain-teed Products Corporation. "Back then, there was really no incentive for us to insulate our homes properly so they'd con- serve energy. But that situation is completely re- versed and many home- owners now realize that they can save up to 30% . on their heating and cool- ing bills every year just by . having six inches (R-19) of fiber glass insulation on the attic floor." For example, if you spent $400 last year on Your oil heating and air conditioning bill, you might have saved up to • $120 of that with proper insulation. Insulating the attic yourself is easily done in a day in most homes. And the initial cost of the in- sulation is generally paid back in heating and air conditioning savings in anywhere from one to three years. Of course, this depends on the amount of.insulation now in your attic, the style of your home, and its gen- eral location. "On the average," Miss Ritchie notes, "the 1,400 square foot home - can be insulaied for about $300 with six inches of fiber glass insulation or its R-19 equivalent. Savings on utility bills quickly. pay for the insulation — and then continue for the, life of the house." In the year 2000, "the good old days" may be 1975. When you consider all the money and energy you could save over that 25year period if you in- sulate your home today, the good old days could look even better. _With A Easy-care rooms to- match family lifestyle Simplicity is the key to they'll need routine main-. a family room• which is tenance to keep them both functional and at- looking their best. tractive, And with the Many styles are avail- various styles of cOntem- able in the new leather- porary furniture and ac- look vinyls and in lami- cessories available today, hated .and translucent the family room can be easily redecorated to.. suit plastics — good durable materials fot family room Your lifestyle. furnishings as they can Basics for a family room be easily Cleaned by spray- often include a Couch, recliner lounge chair, one ing with FantaStik® spray cleaner arid wiping With or two stationary chairs, ,olamps a clean cloth or damp -end tables with sponge: and, perhaps, several small, portable cube tables Chrome - and stainless steel accessories May also or a coffee table:., be cleaned with the spray Determine your family's cleaner; on wood furni- * neods — you Might want to inelude a larget card ture SUrfaces, use a polish table with matching appropriate for the pat- chairs, bOoksheives arid ticUla,r type of WOOden cabinets, too.
