One sure way to discover r
whether your roof is leak-
ing is to look for signs of
water damage during- a
heavy rain. The problem
then becomes one of wait-
ing until the rain stops,
since you can't get the
roof fixed while it's rain-
ing.
On the other hand, when
the weather is nice and
the roof isn't leaking many
people have a tendency to
ignore the problem.
Actually, it isn't wise to
wait until the roof leaks
before doing something
about it. It's better and
often less costly to give
the roof a "going over"
every now and then. But
do it from the ground,
using field glasses, advises
the Asphalt Roofing Man-
ufacturers Association. It's
easy and far less danger-
' ous than walking on the
. roof.
Besides a leak, other
signs that a roof might
need to be replaced in-
clude cracked, curled or
missing shingles. Best of
all, ' try to determine the
age of the. roof. If it's of
standard shingles, 15 years

REROOFING WITH HEAVY-TEXTURED asphalt shingles
adds eye-appealing dimension. Available in popular earth-
tone colors that serve to relate a home with its environment,
these shingles are designed to last up to 25 years with little
'maintenance.
old or older, it's probably.4
due for replacement.
In any event, it's a good
idea to call a professional
roofer who can conduct an
on the roof inspection. He
can tell you, if minor re-
pairs are called for or
whether the roof has to
be replaced.
Should the' situation call
for reroofing, the profes-
sional roofer is also a good
source of information on
how to use roof design
and color to improve a
home's appearance.
Asphalt shingles, far in-
, stance, now come in heavy
textures and earthtorie
colors that add dimension
and depth to a roof. The
rustic shades and deep
shadow lines create attrac-
tive roofs that avoid the
, look of sameness. Design-
ed to last up to 25 years,
the new generation of
asphalt shingles requires
minimal maintenance.

Prime bare spots. There are
two primers for the home,
galvanized primer and exterior oil
.primer.
Galvanized primer is to be
applied to eave s trough ,
downspout s, louvered vents,
wherever paint has peeled back to
expose galvanized metal. These
bare spots should first be washed
With vinegar to cut the flux
coating, then primed.
Exterior oil primer is to be
applied to all bare wood, new or
otherwise. For• a smooth finish,
sand the primer after it dries.
All that remains now is
application of the top coat, unless
Specified, as thinning breaks
down paint. Choose a high quality
top coat for a lasting finish.
There are two types of top coat;
These' are acrylic latex and alkyd
(oil). Latex introduces a new
principal, the idea being to
prevent blistering and peeling by
allowing moisture to pass
through. For a clapboard home
which peels constantly, remove
old finish and prime it , sparingly,
then apply' two coats of the latex
finish. This will allow the
moisture from the wood to move
to surface and evaporate. On a
humid day the moisture can move
'back into the wood. Latex cannot
be put over old paint since it dries
too quickly to bond properly. Its
highly porous finished has a low
lustre.
Alkyd paint should be 'used on.
surfaces which are handled or
that can accumulate dirt, such as
doors, railings, silli, fenEes.
Start painting at the highest
places and work aown. Paint well
above the ladder aghoth ways can
be reached from this position:
This also avoids moving the
ladder frequently.
Paint clapboard • edges first,
then the flat areas between them.
Don't flow paint on but bruSh it
on well after laying a brushful in
two or three spots.
Paint a three-foot band across
the house. Then drop down and
paint another band. Finish an
area you have started to a wall,
door or window to avoid lapping.
Choose a good quality brush
with long, full bristles that are
well tapered. A deluxe brush will
cover twice the distance that the
economy brush will and gives a
smoother finish.

Summertime allows the
homeowner to tackle home
improvements that could not be
done in any other season.
With vacation, pleasant
weather and the right approach,
these jobs can be a pleasure.
One of the most obvious chores
for the summer improvement
list is exteriordecoration. for
those who enjoy,
,
'Working around
home, putting a protective and
decorative cover on the house can
be rewarding and relaxing.
There is a step-by-step
procedure that should be followed
when painting a 'house,
regardless of the kind of surface
your home has — wood siding,
stucco, brick, concrete or cement
block — that can help it look years
younger. _
First check siding and remove
loose paint with a putty knife and
wire brush. Then sandpaper to
feather down edges and use a
spot primer on all bare wood'
Replace rid boards and nail
down lor siding. Set nail heads
below surface and fill nail holes
with putty and again use primer
on all new wood surfaces.
Check wooden areas for knots
bleeding through. If there is such
an area, scrapp it down to the
-bare wood and apply a heavy coat
of orange shellac. This prevents
the saps from bleeding through
again.
Employ a wire brush on siding
to, clean away grime and reveal
loose paint. It is also a good idea
to wash down surfaces with a
cleanser such as trisodium
phosphate (TSP) to remove all
contamination such as spots, dust
and cobwebs: Follow with a
thorough rinsing.
Of major concern _are: ,Areas
which have become chalky. Chalk
must be removed so new paint
can bond to the old finish. Glossy
areas such as upper frames and
soffits are protected and usually '
have a calcium-like build-up that
may not be visible. On a humid
day, moisture will activate this
build-up and cause the new finish
to blister.
Where needed, recaulk joints
around chimneys, doors and
window frames. Be sure to get the
caulking compound into cracks
and not only on the surface.
Scrape away the old cracked
putty around window frames.
Clean the window sash surfaces
