Maitland Valley Conservation Authority staff have been occupied in organizing the summer student employment program (formerly SWEEP) which will once again be carried out by the Authority. Due to large budget cuts by the Ontario, Government the program will not be able to operate on as lar ge a scale as in the past. gowever, additional students will be hired but the length of employment will be shortened to 7 from 10 weeks for labourers and to 14 from 16 1 weeks for technical staff. A total of 32 people will be hired by the Authority under the program including a technical staff of four. Projects to be undertaken by the students include cleanup of the Gorrie and Brussels Mills, Management of the Plantation at the Galbraith Conservation Area and various municipal projects. The Conservation Areas Advisory Board and the Refores- tation, Land Use and Wildlife Advisory Board have approved the purchase of 350 10 - 12 inch trout for the put and take fish pond at the Falls Reserve Conser- vation Area. The fish will be purchased from the Creek Bank Trout Farm - Elmira and placed in' the pond in time for the opening trout season on April 24th. Garnet Wright, Robert Grasby and Russell Kernighan were appointed as members of a committee responsible for the operation of the Falls Reserve Conservation Area for 1976. It was agreed that Raymond Gowdy of the field , staff be the Falls Reserve Conservation Area supervisor again this year. At a meeting on April 1, the Reforestation, Land. Use and Wildlife Advisory Board was informed of the installation of 14 Huronview Mr. and Mrs. Allan Schram of Goderich, Elsie Henderson and Norman Speir provided the old tyrne music for Monday's program. The Goderich Township Women's Institute volunteers -assisted with the activities. Slide pictures of Hawaii were shown by Willa Taylor on "Family Night". Donald and Ronald Taylor of the Brucefield area entertained with electric guitar instrumentals during intermission. The Belgrave Women's Institute were, hosts for the April birthday party on Wednesday. Mrs,I411 Coultesl . was emcee for" the program with the first part taken by the Glee Club of the 'East Wawanosh Public School. Mrs. Daer is the leader .of the group of forty-two students who entertained with songs by the choir, vocal duets and quartette numbers, piano and guitar instrumentals. The second part of the program was provided by members of the Institute with readings by Mrs.. Scott and Mrs. Bolt and sing-a-long accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Norman Coultes. Twenty-six residents having April Birthdays received gifts with special mention to Mrs. Mosack who on April 20th celebrated her "100th " Birthday and to Miss Ida Walkinshaw and Earl Campion who are now eligible for the "Over 90" club. Mrs. Mary' AntiReigier thanked the Belgrave Institute f or arranging the splendid program and party. The nesting program is being carried out in co-operation with the Bayfield Bluebird Society and its success will be reviewed jointly by members of the Authority staff and by ,the Society. It was recommended that the planting fees for the Refores- tation. Assistance Program be increased. Under the new schedule fees for machine planting would be raised to $20/1,000 trees from $15. and fees for hand planting-would be raised to $25/1,000 from $20.00. This schedule will not come into effect until 1977. Approximately 45,000 trees will be planted under the Assistance Program this year. A shortage of nursery stock resulted in the program being cut from an original 60,000 trees. The Executive Committee of the Authority at a `meeting on April 7 heard Resource Manager Deslauriers, report on research which he and the Resources Technician had carried out regarding a proposed sewage lagoon for the town, of Palmerston. The Land Acquisition Committee report was pre,se nted to the executive by Harold Hyndman who said that Options to purchase on an additional 450 acres of land in the Saratoga Swamp had been accepted by the property owners. If all of this land is purchased it will mean that 900 acres of ecologically valuable swamp will be under the Authority's control. Mr Des- lauriers emphasized that the newly established Maitland Conservation Foundation would need to play a leading role in raising the necessary funds. The executive also gave its consent to the realignment of the charges for producing copies of the Authority's mapping. People or agencies wishing copies will be charged at the rate of .15 ../ ft. The Wawanosh Municipal located on Concession 6, Wawanosh Township is b officially turned over to Authority.
