Thornhill man dies MRS. JOSEPH HOLMES
Mrs. Mary Eliza Jane Holmes
passed away auddenly in Wing-
ham and District
the
on
Saturday, April 31 , the result of a
heart attack. She was 65 years of
age.
A daughter of Robert and
Catherine Shiell, she was born
April 6 in Kent County. She
resided in Elma Township, where
she received her schooling, until
her marriage to Joseph Holmes
on February 1, 1928, at Atwood.
Following- their marriage, they
resided on the 14th line . of
McKillop Township and later on
the 5th line of Morris Township
for some years prior to retiring in
Blyth in 1974. She was a member
of Belgrave UI?ited Church.
Surviving are: her husband;
one daughter,\' Mrs. William
(Eileen) McLellan of R. R. 4,
Brussels; two sons, Grant of Blyth
and Wayne of 'Fergus, and three
brothers, Harold Shiell of Kit-
chener, George Shiell of Welland
and Alvin Shiell of Atwood; eight
grandchildren.
She was predeceased by three
sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services were held
from the Tasker Funeral Home,
Blyth, at 3:30 p.m. on Monday,
April 5th. Rev. Cecil Wittick was
the officiating minister. Inter-
ment took place in Brussels
Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: George
Michie, Glen Van Camp, Len
Rooney, Lloyd Appleby, Harold
Baechler and Wes Small.
MRS. MAUDE AUSTIN
Mrs. Maude Austin, a life long
resident of the Blyth area, died in
Clinton Public Hospital on. April
the 2nd 1976. She was 86 years of
age. She was born in Hullett
Township on June 15th 1889. She
was the formerlWaudeSaunders
daughter of the late Lewis A,
Saunders and Martha Jane
Sanders
She was married to William
Austin in 1915 and they farmed in
Hullett Township until his death
when she retired to live in
Mrs. Austin was an adherent of . the Blyth United Church.
The funeral service was held on
Monday April 5th from the Tasker
Funeral Home, with the Rev.
Cecil Wittich officiating.
interment was in Blyth Union
Cemetery.
Those serving as pallbearers
were:Calvert Falconer, William
Carter, Gordon Gross, Harvey
Stewart, Floyd Sinith and Lloyd
Stewart.
William Austin served as
flower bearer.
The Afternoon Unit of Brussels
U.C.W. met in the church parlour
on Tuesday, April 6. Thirteen
members and one visitor were in
attendance. Twenty-one visita-
tions were recorded. Mrs. Miller
read a poem entitled "Easter" to
open the meeting. The devotions
were convened by Mrs. Steffler.
"Jesus keep me near the Cross"
was sung by the group. Mrs.
Hupfer read the Scripture Mark
15: 25-39. A topic, entitled "The
Cross" was presented by Mrs.
Steffler followed by prayer and an
Easter poem "Before the dawn
came Easter.",
Mrs. Stephenson and Mrs.
Steffler contributed duets and
Mrs. Miller conducted the busi-
ness agenda. A Bible Study was
led by Mrs. Crocker. It took the

the weekend with Mr. and Mrs.

are home following a holiday in
Florida..
Mrs. Gordon Engel was a
delegate to Synodical held in
Chippewa on April 6 and 7th.
Mrs. Lloyd Hall W' as a patient
in Listowel Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Gordon Connolly also is in
Listowel Hospital where she

visited with Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred

Mr. Ralph McEachern of
Thornhill died on. March 30th. He
leaves to mourn his wife Helen
(Sholdice), two, sons and, three
daughters. Helen is the daughter
of the late Mr. and Mrs. Earl
Sholdice of Walton. Mr. and mrs.
Ross Knight attended the funeral.
Meeting six of the Cranbrook
French Knots was held on
Saturday April 10th at 10:00 at
the home of Arlene Strickler. The
meeting was opened with the 4H
pledge. Rosanne read the
minutes of the last meeting. The
next meeting is, to be held on
Saturday May 1st at 1:30 at the
home of Ellen Lefor. There was a
discussion on our topic for the club
skit, "A Touch Of Stichery-A '
Touch ,For you." Arlene
discussed where the Satin Stitch
and the sheaf Filling stitch are
