An Ontario agency
OHC units in 160 municipalitie
Ontario. Housing Corporation
was .started as an agency of the.
Ontario Government in 1964
following the recommendations of
the Ontario Housing Advisory
Committee which called for the
creation of a crown corporation as
the residential building arm of the
government.,
Since then, OHC has produced
nearly five times 'as much public
housing in Ontario as existed hi"
the whole of Canada at the time it
began, operations. These units are
scattered throughout more than
.160 municipalities in the
province.
A popular misconception is that Housing (NOAH)` - for all those
who are dwlling in less populous'
northern regions of the province;
and grants to assist limited.
dividend housing developments
for elderly persons.
By May 13 1973, these
programs resulted in a total
family and senior citizen housing
program of 80,870 units of which.
51,882 are occupied and the
remainder under construction or.
development.
More than 12,500 building lots
had been brought to market for
disposal of leasehold land to
home purchasers. This includes
long-term land banking for
periods as long as 10 to 15 years,
and short-term land development
of subdivisions for lease.
5. The ' development of
condominiums under certain
price restrictions.
6. Mortgage lending, both for
single family and semi-detached
housing and condominium
dwellings, high-rise and town
housing.
7. A number of smaller pro-
grams, such as Tenant Purchase;

OHC is associated only with
socially-assisted housing such as
family and senior citizen
dwellings. In fact, about half of its
operation is aimed at assisting
middle-income families into home
ownership. For example, in 1970
it was the largest single lender of
funds for condominium housing
in Canada. In the ownership area,
it3ntroduced to Canada the land
lease approach for residential
accommodation, had a mortgage
portfolio at the end of 1972 of
$338 million, and is actively
engaged in long-term land
banking.
The individual programs of
OHC are elements of what is
known as the "Horne Ownership
Made Easy" (H.O.M.E.) Plan. It
covers all OHC programs,
including the subsidized rental
programs. EAch H.O.M.E.
program is designed so that it
may be implemented separately,
depending upon a community's
needs.
The H.O.M.E. Plan includes
:tie following programs:
1. Social, Musing for families
and senior citizens, including a
:rent supplement program on a
rentifeared-to-ineome basis.
2. Housing for , married
graduate students and undergra-
duate stnalents.
3. Integrated community
housing under which funds are
advanced to builders in return for
15-year leases of a.portion of the
building for public housing under
the rent supplement program.
4. Land development I and the
