Although it Was understood the
United States always used the
Imperial system for measuring
idIstance; actually the Americans.
have never used . the Imperial
liquid meaasurements.
"If it's not the Imperial gallon
sold in America, what is it then? I
asked.
Mr. Krauter replied: "It may
be a dirty word to some
Americans, but it's the 'Crown'
measurement they've been using;
that means it takes five of their
gallons to equal four of ours."
To substantiate Mr. Krauter's
knowledge, there are cook books
with' table's of eqnivalents based
on our original weights and
measures system. In this system
it takes five cups,' ba sed on an
eight-fluid ounce capacity, to
equal an Imperial quart; four cups
equal a `crown' quart or, as it is
called in my cook book a `wine
mea sure' quart, .
At Ar chie grewar'S grocery
store, on the main street of
Brussels, my reception was not
very pleasant hen I revealed the
purpose of my, visit because the,,,
grocer must have thought I was a
Member' of, the Metric .Commis-
sion. ' •
' He muttered something in
English.first about, "not' wanting
to' have a damn -thing to do with
it" and, -secondly, he made some
uncomplimentary remark . in
French that I understood to mean,
"shut my mouth,"
After he understood I was not a
federal inspector, Mr,Grewar's
attitude became somewhat
friendlid, but his views on ,
Metric conversion did not.
"I don't like it and don't want it
-but I'm getting paSt the point of
caring; I was strongly against the
retail sales tax when it was
introduced but what could I do
about it?
"Haven't you heard the °old
dictum, "If you can't beat em,
join em! If you haven't, you know
now, that's the only course to
take." Mr. Grewar advised.
