Problems cause stress French classes
Margaret Trudeau had herself
admitted to hospital for psychia-
tric care a year or so ago. By
doing so, she not only made an
intelligent move to protect her
own health -- she also did a great
deal to bring attention to the
cause of mental health in
general.
In one move she showed that
anyone can undergo mental
stress, and that the best thing to
do is recognize the fact,
acknowledge it freely and seek
help.
Statistics show that one
Canadian in eight will, at one
time or another, undergo psychia-
tric treatment. Mental stress is
much more - common ; -fh4n is
generally believed,' and much of it
has its roots.. inproblems ,
day-to-day living '
Because of this, perhaps the

best hope for early detection and
treatment lies in 'the community.
In Ontario during the past 10
years, there has been a shift away
from the old pattern of psychiatric
care in institutions and from what
might be termed a policy of "out
of mind, out of sight". Last year,
fewer than 6,000 patients were
resident in psychiatric institutions
in this province, compared to
16,000 in 1960.
The trend now is towards
treatment in the community and
in psychiatric departments of
local general hospitals, with the
emphasis being placed more
frequently on out-patient care.
Every population area of 30,000 in
Ontario now has a psychiatric
staffed; in addition to
.psychiatrists, by !. other -- trained
health profes*StotialS; including
nurses, psychologists and• social
workeri:
*At the; "grass roots" level, the
Canadian MentalHealth Associa-
tion is a ' national voluntary
citizens' organization working 'to
alleviate mental illness and to
promote mental health. It has 29
branches in Ontario, and each
branch works in co-operation with
local psychiatric hospitals and
other mental health service
delilvery facilities.
The task of each branch is to
educate people about mental
health, encouraging early
recognition and treatment of
problems that, without profes-
si'onal intervention, might
become more serious.
Many of the branches provide
hospital visiting services,
rehabilitation services, transpor-
tation and social events for the
discharged patient seeking
recreational or employment help.
In addition, branches provide a
referral service for persons in
need of community mental health
services.
Often, the difference between
the two states of mental illness
and mental health has to do with
coping or not coping with life,
and, as Dr., Harvey Brooker, a
psychologist at Toronto's Clarke
Institute of Psychiatry, points out:
"There's a very thin line between
the two."
So if you think you may have a
problem, don't be afraid to talk
about it. And seek help.
For assistance in the
commu nity, contact your local
Canadian Mental Health
Association branch. The Ontario
Division is located at 8 Pailton
Crescent, Toronto, Ontario, M4S
2H8.

Three of the four French
teachers in the system outlined to
the trustees at the board meeting
how French is being taught to the
students in the 19 schools under
board jurisdiction.
Presenting the programme
were Kathleen Mcillan, Rita
Lauwaert and Gaeten Blanchette.
Only the Grade 7 and Grade 8

March the meetings of the board
will be held on March 8 and
March 29.
The meeting was adjourned at
11:20 p.m. when the board went
into committee-of-the-whole. The
