Runner up in the zone conte was • Diane , Mitchelmore from Goderich. Her speech was on the "Twins" in her family. Her sister • and the ,family dog. Paul and Diane competed against seven other students from Clinton, Witighain, Exeter, Goderich and Seaforth. Judges, were Mrs. Joyce Monteith, Exet er; Bruce Delbridge, Exeter and Rev. Taylor, Varna. JOHN'S ANGLICAN CHURCH Tuesday, March 2n Friday, Saturday & Sunday The Smokey Dunn Paul Van Esbrock of Exeter won the public speaking contest sponsored by the Independent Order of Oddfellows, Huron. district, last Friday night at Central Huron Secondary School, Clinton. Paul's prepared speech, a .atire on the union of Canada with ;he' United States, made him the Tone champion and won him a trip to the United Nations in New York. The contest is sponsored by'the liddfellows of North America and Is called the Pilgrimage of Youth For the United Nations. So far 54 students from Ontario have won . the trip. Once in New York, the students, aged either 16 or 17, from all Over North America, are taken on a tour of the U.N. and are met by ambassadors from different countries. The ambassadors present the pro's and cons of the U.N. and each student is expected to speak to the group about what he has learned and how he feels about James Murphy, Artistic Director of Huron Country Playhouse, has announced that Anne of Green, G ables will headline the Playhouse swimmer -,eason. Anne of Green Gables is hot -inly Canada's . most famous musical, but a world hit. Based on Lucy Maud.Montgomery's novel .which first appeared in 1908, this form of Anne soon became a ThSusehold word. Then there were several film versions of the story, including a 1956 T.V. musical with lyrics by Donald Harman, and music by Norman Campell. In 1965, the newly formed Confechration theatre in Prince Edward Island, the locale of the to commissioned a stage version of the niuSical frotn the Flatten Campbell team. This huge success has been repeated every year in Charlottetown since; with sold-out national tours, a London (England) version, a long run at. New York's City Center Theatre, sand numerous other productions the wor1d. over, corps, and full orchestra. The production will rehearse in Grand Bend, then play two weeks at the playhouse, and two weeks on tour • to locations throughout South, ,western Ontario. comedies and four musicals.
