110.11):compensate them.
Here in Ontario, we have a law called
"The Co'mp'ensation for Victims of: Crime Act,"
It is administered by the Criminal Injuries
Compensation Board. Happily, not too
- many people need to Use it:
But When 'someone' is injured or killed by
a crime of violenCe Which' is an offence
against the Criminal Code of Canada, your
'Ontarib Government may award cOmpen-
eatign to the victim, a person reeponsible
for supporting the victim, or the depen-
dants of the victim.,
Am'ong the crimes for which compensa-'
tion may be awarded are murder, wound-
ing, assault, and rape. And victims do not
need to be the personsagainst whom the
crime was originally directed. Peopte killed
orinjured while preventing or attempting to
prevent a crime against another person,
arresting or attempting to arrest someone
committing such a crime, or assisting a
law-enforcement officer may also receive
compensation.
Compensation may be awarded for:
• expenses incurred as a result of death or
injury,
• monetary loss incurred becauee of the
victim's inability to work,
• monetary lose incurred by dependants as
a result of the victim's death. •
Compensation may alsO be awarded for •
otherresults of violent crime.
Applications for compensation must be
, made within one year of the injury or death,
but the applicant should apply as soon as
possibte—not wait for a court to convict the
alleged criminal. ,
