Here in Ontario, we have a law called "The Co'mp'ensation for Victims of: Crime Act," It is administered by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board. Happily, not too - many people need to Use it: But When 'someone' is injured or killed by a crime of violenCe Which' is an offence against the Criminal Code of Canada, your 'Ontarib Government may award cOmpen- eatign to the victim, a person reeponsible for supporting the victim, or the depen- dants of the victim., Am'ong the crimes for which compensa-' tion may be awarded are murder, wound- ing, assault, and rape. And victims do not need to be the personsagainst whom the crime was originally directed. Peopte killed orinjured while preventing or attempting to prevent a crime against another person, arresting or attempting to arrest someone committing such a crime, or assisting a law-enforcement officer may also receive compensation. Compensation may be awarded for: • expenses incurred as a result of death or injury, • monetary loss incurred becauee of the victim's inability to work, • monetary lose incurred by dependants as a result of the victim's death. • Compensation may alsO be awarded for • otherresults of violent crime. Stewart Procter 1946 , 1950, Mrs. Cliff Logan:1963, Mrs. Ivan Wightman 196871971 as well as the present president Mrs. Stan Hopper since 1974, the secretary- treasurer, Mrs Ross Higgins.; Miss Jane Pengilley, and Mrs. Loralee Marshall, Home Economists. MiSs.. Pengilley brought greetings from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food. An anniversary cake which was. decorated by Mts. Leslie Bolt was cut by Mrs. L,ena Higgins, who, was present at the first picnic held by the Belgrave W.I. in 1911. The 4-11 Homemaking. Club ' leaders were guests and they.. as well as former club leaderS were thanked and congratulated for their efforts. Mrs.Stanley Hopper conducted arnemorial,service in memory of former members who have passed on, Mrs Ross Higgins lit a candle in memory of those members who pasSed away prior to the 60th Anniversary and then a candle in memory of. Mrs. Myrtle Anderson, Mr. Violet Cook and Mr. Annie Coultes was lit. The roll call was answered by several members contributing a picture or story that can be inserted in TWeedsmuir History book. Mrs. Ivan Wightman` gave, a detailed account of the history of the local Institute. She-recalled many names and incidents in the past that made the, 'audience aware of the work and planning that has gone into the branch-over the past 65 years. Mrs. Wightman did a great- deal of research into tho history of the branch and it was appreciated':: by every one 'present. The motto "One Way to make the world better is by, improving yourself " Was given by 1VIrS. Norman Coultes convener for the meeting. Mrs. Hopper presided for the business. The secret ary read the' correspondence whichlitcluded a letter from F.W.1,0.. President, Mrs. H. WhiSke and' an acknowledgement of a donationto War Memorial Children's Hospital. It was decided to buy bowls for use at banquets and Mrs. Ivan Wightman is to look into this matter with regards to prices and sizes etc. There was a motion. to send money in for a delegate to go to Officer's Conference to be held in Waterloo May 4,5,6., The Branch DireCtors are be the Nominating 'Committee for 1976. The BelgraVe W.I. has been asked to pro'ide a program' and birthday treats at Huronview on April 21st at 2 p in and the following. COMmittees were chosen Program - Mrs.. William Coultes, Mrs, Norman C'ottlfes, Lunch - Mrs. Stewart 'Procter' and Mrs. Ross Higgins: Gifts Lawrence Taylor' and Mrs, Leonard James.. It was agreed to eater for the Soil and Crop litiprOVedient Ladies Night banquet to he held. on March 10th at 7 pail. With Mrs Ross FligginS and Mts. Glenn Coultes as committee to 'plan the meal, • It was decided to hOld a Shoot Party" in hall on March 12 at 8:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided and a silver collection taken.. The March meeting will be held in the arena rooms at 2 p.m,. on March 16. ,The meeting closed with the national anthem. Shower• Held‘ A miscellaneous shower •was held in. the Women's Institute Hall' on Sunday afaternoon for Miss Brenda ,Coultes, bride elect, with neighbours and relatives in attendance, She Was assisted` in opening her gifts by Mrs.-Bryan Coultes and Miss Doris Coultes.
