Inside Howick Central
OPP demonstrates dangers of hydro plant
Constable Wray from the
Goderich detachment of the
O.P.P. visited our school on
several days in the last few
weeks. His visits had been
delayed because of bad winter
weather. On this visit he brought
a display of a hydro plant donated
by Ontario Hydro., This plant
showed the dangers of a hydro
plant and electrically charged
wires. This display'shows a model
car hitting a pole and the wire
falling on the car, a man being
electrocuted on a ladder and a
generating station etc, .1-11S'
display, film arid talk was very
interesting and we hope he comes
again.

Meanwhile the Snow Keeps
Piling Up
The snow is getting higher and
higher arid soon will reach the top
of the school. I measured it at 4 to
6 feet high and in some places the
snow is .peaked like 10 to ,12 foot
mountains. It 's not really so nice
to sit in the glassroom all day
when all you can see out of the
window is snow and more snow,
but when, recess comes the snow
,mountains make a great place on
which to play.

Cancellation of School
Howick Central School h as had
4 days cancelled (Jan. 14, Jan. 16,
Jan, 26 and Feb. 2), due to bad
weather. If these days hadn:t
been cancelled we probably
would have been storm-stayed at
the school. We should be
prepared for the weather which
causes the cancellations of school
by taking home extra books from
which we can study and work
during the clay. Cancellations
from school means extra work to
catch up on. With exams coming
nearer it was felt necessary to
cancel 'the Professional
Development Day planned to be
on Jan. 28. Depending on how
you look at it, cancellations are
either good or bad.

Groundhog Day
Last Monday, February 2nd,
Groundhog Day was celebrated.
Groundhog Day was based on a
custom that the people from
Great Britain and Germany
brought to America. According to
the legend the groundhog or
woodchuck awakens from his long
winter sleep and looks out of his
burrow. If he sees his shadow
there will be six more weeks of
winter. But since he didn'ypring,
will come early this year
hopefully.

What if the Buse Didn't get
home?
"Howick Central School has
been unable to send buses home.
The children will be staying at the
school for the night."
Think if you heard this over the
radio. What thoughts would race
through your mind?
Well, talking to Mr. Stewart
the school custodian, I found that
things wouldn't look so grim. He
stated that food was kept on hand
and is rotated' so that it would be
fresh in area stores in the case of
an emergency.

Although there is no other
power source other than hydro in
the school, we are not as bad off
as it looks. At the school there are
three hydro lines through phase,
not like the normal ones on the
farm. Therefore we would have
power if up to two weredead.
If you should ever hear that
announcement, don't worry we
.are prepared.
