has no
plans for
retarded .
at GPH,
Smith says
Newly elected Ontario Liberal
ceder Stuart Smith says he
doesn't think the province intends
o do anything for the mentally
etarded at all, even . though
ealth minister Frank Miller has
aid that the Goderich Psychiatric
ospital will be used as a
esource centre for the retarded
after it is closed.
Dr. Smith spent a half hour in
eaforth Friday afternoon, on his
vay back to Hamilton . from a
our and a meeting with the staff
f Goderich Psychiatric.
The Hamilton psychiatrist says
he federal government gave the,
rovince about $14 million in
pedal funds to be spent for the
etarded last year. He says he
hinks the province has spent this ,
noney on other things.
If the Ministry of Health can
ell GPH on paper to the Ministry
f Social and Community Services
vho run things for the mentally
etarded, the province can claim
hey spent $4 or $5 million of this
ederal money ' for the building.
hat way, although no money
hanges hands, the province will
e able to account for some of the
ederal funds for the retarded.
GPH is one of the most
rogressive small hospitals in the
ountry, Dr. Smith says. "It's a
odel facility for a rural area."
he GPH director, Dr. Michael
onion, • can't , understand the
rovince's decision, the new
iheral leader says.
`He built it up and then he hears
n the radio that his life's work is
hrown out.''
The province picked the small-
st psychiatric hospitals, Tim-
ins and Goderich to close, Dr.
mith says, because they figured
hat their patients could easily be
ransferred to nearby hospitals.
'In the case of Timmins, the
icarest, in North Bay, is 270
miles away," Dr. Smith says. He
ailed this move back to large
cntralized • hospitals a backward
tep.
Huron Middlesex' MPP Jack
icidell who accompanied his new
eader said he thinks the health
inistry is backing down on their
ecision to close GPH, and says
ere should be an announcement
us week. People in Goderich
ho work for the hospital "can't
and not knowing," Dr. Smith
ays.
