Snowmobile safety concerns OPP
With the advent of early winter
snow making conditions ideal for
winter sports, snowmobile
operators across the province
have taken advantage of the
situation and have made an early
start on the season's death and
injury rate attributed directly to
snow vehicles.
New snow vehicle legislation;
has recently been passed by the
Ontario government in an effort
to prevent some of the needless
slaughter caused by
snowmobilers annually.
To acquaint the public with
some of the important points of
the new legislation, the OPP
request all snowmobilers to
become acquainted with the
following:
Registration
All snowmobiles will have to be
registered at the nearest licence
issuing, office, regardless of
whether they have been
registered before, unless the
owner has already registered the
vehicle for 1976. All snow
vehicles must be registered
within six days of purchase or
sale. In addition to registration
you must have a permit to drive a
motorized snow vehicle, unless
you are driving it only on property
owned or occupied by yourself.
Driving
Generally, you may not drive
Heatedwaterbeds sound
wonderful for winter nights, They
may also save little liyes.
Every ° year in Canada,
hundreds of infants die from a
repiratory disease syndrome
called crib death. The pattern is
almost always the same. The
baby is put to bed happy and
healthy. During the night, there
is no sign of disturbance of any
kind, In the morning, the baby is
dead.

Suggest heated waterbeds
can save young lives
The cause is not suffocation.
Autopsies show no clear-cut
pathology in the lungs or
anywhere elk; there's no
evidence of vomiting or choking.
This fatal phenomenon, some
experts believe, is brought about
by spasms of the vocal chords
which shut off the intake of air
during sleep. A viral infection in
the respiratory tract could cause
breathing difficulties and trigger
the lethal spasm. Death may
result from an inability to breathe
through the mouth when nasal
passages close. No one knows for
sure. But the disease happens
more often in winter than any
other season.
Now doctors at the University
of California hope that heated
waterbeds can help reduce' the
death toll among newborn babies.
Dr. Louis Gluck, who has
developed a method for, pre-
dicting this condition in unborn
infants, says the small water
m attress, kept at body
temperature, gives the baby the
same sense of Weightlessness
that he or she felt in the womb
itself. A beating oscillator can
give the infant a constant sense of
motion, and the recording of a
heartbeat can duplicate the=
mother's and be passed through
the waterbed.
Researchers plan to set up the
gurling, bleeping environ for
babies in the infant intensive care
unit at the University's School of
Medicine at San Diego.
