New American
hotel is sold cCutch0on new warden
The New American. Hotel in

Mr. Sugg said that the staff at

Reeve Jack M cCutcheon of
Brussels Was elected Huron
County warden Tuesday in
Goderich in a tight race,
, Reeve McCutcheon and
McKillop Reeve Allan Campbell
tied with 28 votes each on the
second ballot. The reeve of
Goderich, Stan Profit had the tie
breaking vote, as is traditional,
and voted for Reeve McCutcheon.
A large crowd sat in the county
council chambers and stood in the
hall outside to h ear the results of
the vote.
The third candidate, Reeve.
Harold Lobb of Clinton was
defeated on the first ballot.
Reeves McCutcheon and
Campbell also tied in that ballot,
getting 20. votes each to Reeve
Lobb's 16.
Three county councillors,
Reeve Simon Hallahan of E.
Wawanosh, Hullett Deputy Reeve
Joseph Hunking and Turnberty
Reeve Harry Mulvey switched
their votes from McCutcheon to
Campbell in the second ballot.
The new warden has been
reeve • of Brussels and a
representative to county council ,
since 1971. He is married to the
former Esther Raymond and they
have three daughters, Michelle,
Laurie and Jill, His mother is
Mrs.' Lottie McCutcheon of
Brussels.

Reeve McCutcheon was
nominated by Hay Township
Reeve John Tinney who said he
had been an excellent chairman of
the county's Huronview
committee and was a successful
businessman.
McKillop's Reeve Campbell
'was nominated by Morris reeve
and 1974 Warden B ,ill Elston,
who noted that Reeve Campbell
had served seven years on county
council.:
In his speech 'before the
election Reeve McCutcheon said
he had been tagged as favouring
county restructuring but that he
was only in favour of keeping the
'door open. He said • Huron's
present committee system. is
( "efficient and thorough" and
; added that he's not "interested in
I change for the sake of change."
' Huron is a leader among
counties because county council
has had foresight and has "stuck
our neck out", he said.
He called cutbacks in health
spending by the province in
Huron "totally unacceptable."

The Brussels Lions Club met in
the Brussels, Library basement
with. 29 members and 4 visitors
enjoying the meal prepared by
the Presbyterian Church ladies.
Lion Jack Knight was appoint-
ed to look after the International
Youth Exchange Program. Lion.
Wayne Lowe gave a verycompre-.
liensive report on the Polar Daiie
Committees. Hockey (limy tickets
were handed out by Lion Ralph
Pearson and-Lion Jim Johnston
announced that the local Hockey
draw would start Saturday night.
The financial statement was given
by Treasurer, Lion Jim Prior.
Lion Hen Km Pas introduced
the gueit speaker, Lion Dougall
Campbell from the Elmira Lions
Club who spoke' on-the merits• of
forming a Leo Club: LEO stands
for Leadership, Experience, Op-
'portunity. It will' be financed by
the local Lions Club with the
exception of a.,$2.50•membership
and is open to all girls and boys
W20 years of age. 'Lion Bill
Beatont thanked the speaker. The
Club unanimously decided to
sponsor a Leo Club and it was left
with the Boys and Girls Commit-
tee. Lion WAyne Lowe and Lion
Jim Prior offered their services as
advisors. Lion Jim Prior reminded
the members that the second half
of their dues were now due.
A Brussels area native was the
proud mother of the first baby of
the new year born in. Listowel
Memorial Hospital. Gary and
Brenda (Pollard) Fizeil of
Monkton are the parents of
Benjamin Robert, who arrived at
2:42 p.m. January 4.
Brenda, Who is 21, is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George
Pollard of Listowel and lived
south of Brussels before moving
to Monkton a few years ago.
Optimists plan
Arrangements , for the • Poker
Snowmobile Rally on January 25
were completed when Optimists
of Brussels held a business
meeting Thursday night at the
Legion. Pres. . Dan Pearson
presided for the 'meeting.
A teen dance with a Disc
Jockey is to be held Saturday,
January 17.
An. open dance is 'being
planned for a Saturday night at
the Legion and the committee for
the Atom Tournament is busy
organizing for r March with
proposed dates March 20-21-26-
27-28.
The n eict meeting will be held
at the Crossroad Restaurant,
Walton on January 22.
The president, Dan Pearson
urged the committees to keep tip
their hard work on their projects.

The old Logan mill at the dam
which was taken over by the
Maitland Conservation authority
some time ago, and clearly bears
their name, is 'being alloWed to
fall into a sad state of disrepair,
We know that reduction in funds
perhaps makes restoration at this
time impossible but surely they
could manage repairs to keep it
from becoming an. eyesore.

snowmobilers coming up on
Sunday, January 25th. The
Optimist Club of Brussels is
sponsoring a Snowmobile Poker
Rally which should provide lots of
excitement for spectators. They
are also sponsoring a draw for a
side of beef.' What a welcoMe
prize that will be for the lucky
winner.
