CHRISTMAS CUSTOMS around the world are reflected in
traditional food and pastries. In Switzerland hundreds of
"Grattimannen" are brought to life for the holidays.
`Grattimaa' old Swiss tradition
Holiday time is tradi-
tionally enjoyable, filled
with warm memories of
old friends and family
togetherness. However, it
can also be a harrowing
period for those respon-
sible for,the housekeeping
chores ... from preparing
the goodies to cleaning up
the mess afterward.
Here are some tips to
help make your post-holi-
day period as pleasurable
as your holidays them-
selves:
• GET ORGANIZED be-
fore attempting clean-ups.
Do one room at a time,
starting with the kitchen
and dining room and leav-
ing the bedrooms (the
least trafficked area) for
last.
• CATCH SPILLS and
crumbs immediately, Don't
give them aichance to "set"
or become ground-in.
• HAVE PLENTY of
those giant plastic trash
bags on hand for the "wet
garbage" that never seems
to end this time of year.
• ONCE THE MAJOR
CLEANUP IS COMPLET-
ED, treat yourself to a va-
cation from housework —
eat dinner out or order
lunch in. Pamper yourself

On December 6th in
Switzerland, St. Nicholas
Day is celebrated. Some
time before that special
event all bakers are up to
their elbows in kneading-
troughs and the work of
bringing hundreds of
"grattimannen" to life --
men made from sweet
dough and varying in size.
Children, infected by
the festive atmosphere,

looking figures who later

Along with hundreds of
identical companions they
are shoved into a hot oven.

corner of their mouth and

Choosing a gift
for the liberated,
man, woman
This Christmas it might
be a good idea to recon-
sider the gifts you're con-
templating giving in this
age of liberation for both '
men and women.
Male and female roles
are no longer so rigidly
defined. Today many men
enjoy whipping up a gour- ,

women happily wielding
