py outcomes.
First, some ground
rules: Remember, a spot
is easiest to remove if it's
treated as soon as possible.
Washable items should be
laundered according to
the manufacturer's in-
structions; water temper-
atures are important
The spots a homemaker
is most likely to encounter
—and any necessary emer-
gency remedies — are
these:
• Gravies and fondues
— scrape off as much of
the grease as possible. Use
the spray pretreat or spot-
lifter to get the residue,
• Egg Nog and heavy
cream — lukewarm water
or soap and water will re-
move any. solid portion;
then pretreat or spot-lift
accordingly.
• Cranberry sauce and
berry juices — sponge with
cold water first and pre-
treat or spot-lift.
• Wines — lukewarm
water will remove white
wine spots on non-wash-
ables; spot-lifter takes
care of red or rosé spots.
For washable items, just
use spray pretreat before
laundering.
• Candle wax — place
the stained item between
layers of absorbent paper
and press with a warm
iron. This will draw up
most of the solid wax.
• Chafing dish smudges
— sponge off sooty residue
with cool water.
• Coffee on a non-
washable item, spot-lifter
will remove the spot; any
traces of sugar will re-
, spond to a moist cloth.
• Lipstick — just spot-
lift or pretreat.
• Green vegetable spots
— wet stained area with
cool water, then spot-lift
or pretreat.
• Evergreen Sap —
sponge up as much of the
sticky solid or residue as
possible; then spot-lift or
pretreat* and launder.

Christmas
food is
symbolic
Surprisingly enough, mince pie
is perhaps one of our most
symbolic Christmas foods. At
first, it was 'Made in an oblong
shape to represent the manger at
Bethlehem. The lattice top was
created as a symbol of the
hayrack in the stable. The apples
signified growth and fertility with
the New Year, and Oriental spices
were reminiscent of the gifts of
the wise men. Today's mince
pies may. have more novelty, in
ingredients than the original ones
but they are still a tradition. Food
Advisory Services, Agriculture
Canada suggests a "Cranberry
Mincemeat Pie" that may be
served with ice cream, whipped
cream or foamy sauce. On your
best silver, decked with holly, it is
truly a sweet symbol of
Christmas.
