Get ready in advance (By David Woods) The surgeon dons his gown and mask, and walks into the hospital operating room several times a week; typically, his patients will be undergoing surgery, for the first and only time in their lives. Is it possible, then, for the patient to prepare for 'surgery? Not only possible but essential, says one busy Western Ontario surgedn. At least when the operation is an elective as opposed to an emergency one. The first element df preparation is knowledge. The patient is fully entitled to know what the surgery is for. And there is an obligation on the part of the surgeon +' advise the nat;.-4 ,more mucus in the 'tubes; afterwards, coughing may hurt the healing incision which, for a couple of weeks anyway, is held together only by the stitches. Overweight patients can also make the surgeon's task more difficult, so it's advisable to try to get down to the correct weight before surgery. Obese surgical patients also run a higher risk of complications. Sometimes, if they are able to respond, pre-operative patients may be asked to do exercises to improve circulation and breathing -- and to cough to clear the airways to the lungs.Pebilitated persons such as the elderly or the chronically ill will freauentiv he - es is to 1975-76 ngs are ons are by. the vith bus Board ilary of n equal iers will may be .of one e school ion paid ay at the 1 year. willb e um of $8
