"Good place to stop spiral
B of E rejects higher mileage - allowance.
After a recommendation to
increase mileage allowances for
employees and board members
was ' rejected at Monday's
meeting of the Huron County
Board of Educcation, the matter
was again returned to the
management committee for
further study of increased costs.
Exeter trustee Clarence
McDonald, chairman of the
committee presented a two-level
car allowance plan effective
Prior to the Christmas season
each year, hundreds of thousands
of dollars are solicited by
telephone and collected by
professional fund-raising people.
'All of these telephone solicitors
indicate, or lead people to
believe, that these donations will
be used for the benefit of
underprivileged children or other
worthy causes, the OPP warns.
The Ontario Provincial Police
anti-rackets branch has been
receiving enquiries about
province-wide telephone
solicitations for funds, or requests
for donations to various charities.
With the Christmas Season
approaching, the'main solicitation
now is for Christmas parties for
the needy or handicapped
children. Phone solicitors are
requesting funds from the public
for advertising in Christmas party
November 1, 1975. '
It would have given the
Dirctor of Education,
Superintendents, Manager of
Transportation and itinerant
teachers working out of the.
Administration Centre a car
allowance of $60 per month and
14 cents per mile.
Board members and all
employees not specifically
referred to in the first section
programs or for the purchase of
tickets that are to be given to the
underprivileged or handicappedi
children.
Participation in these schemes
must be by individual choice,
however, the Ontario Provincial
Police remind readers that a very
small portion of the gross
collections ever go any further
than the fund raiser's pocket.
Stick to local programs and
established fund raising groups
you know, for Christmas giving,
they advise.
would get 19 cents per mile.
.Trustee John Elliott was the
first to voice objection to the
increases. He commented, "I'm
personally against increases at
this time. This is maybe a good
spof to stop the spiral."
Bob Peck said he talked
recently to Huron warden Anson
McKinley and was told the county'
was happy with a pay kale
similar to the school board's
proposal.
To this Elliott replied, "We
should ,be a Board and a bunch of
followers of the county."
Board vice-chairman Herb.
Turkheim suggested that the rate
for employees be increased but
the board member rates remain at
the present 15 cents per mile.
Several amendments were
proposed but they were not
accepted by chairman Wilfred'
Shorfreed. Finally, the original
recommendation was voted on
and rejected.
Amendments to eliminate the
monthly set car allowance and
replace it with straight mileage
rates failed to get support.
John Elliott and Cayley Hill
backed a proposal for 18 cents per
mile and Ken Cooke called for 19
cents per mile. Both asked the
board .mileage rates be left at 15
cents.
The final motion to have the
matter returned to the
management committee came
from 'trustees Molly Kunder and
Charles Th omas.
