New device may
cease dr Light tolerance of corn I
A small device enclosed in 'a
foam plastic case may provide
crop researchers in the • not-too-
distant future with improved corn
varieties that have greater
drought tolerance. Professors K.
R. Stevenson of the Crop Science
Department, and G. W, Thurtel
of the Department of Land
Resource Science, Ontario
Agricultural College, have

problems of present research
methods.
"The device has unprece-
dented accuracy and flexibility as
a research, tool in studying plant
water status and drought
tolerance," says Prof. Stevenson.

The instrument clamps on the leaf
of a plant and measures its water
status as the plant stands in the
field."
The devices are delicate and
require considerable electronic
measuring attachments to take
the readings. Interpretation of the
resulting data will enable
researchers to determine
accurately if the plant is suffering
from water stress and to what
degree. prof. Stevenson says that
they feel these devices are ,now
going to become the reference
standard for all other techniques
in this research area.
The technique differs signifi-
cantly with present scientific
approaches. Previously, scientists
had to take so many leaves from a
plant for samplitig purposes that
it was sometimes destroyed. With
this new device, the plant can be
sampled' in the field without
harm.
The research project, st arted
about 1970 under grants provided
by the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food and the
National Research Council
(Ottawa) , was developed because
Stevenson and Thurtell were
aware of shortcomings in the
original techniques.
"The old techniques, while
accurate in experimental
solutions, had inherent errors
when using leaf samples. This
resulted in readings that weren't
as accurate as they really need to
be," Prof. Stevenson says.
One of the applications of the
new device will be in research to
do with flooding or poor drainage.
As a result, Ontario producers
may soon see the development of
corn varieties with improved
drought tolerance. In co-oper-
ation with the Mexican govern-
ment, a number of varieties have
been tested that appear to have
improved drought tolerance.
"One problem we've come up
against is that the varieites are
extremely late in maturity," the
researcher says. "We're attempt-
ing to cross some of these with
adapted varieties, but right now
it's too early to determine the
success of the program."
