Every year at this time The Childrens' Aid Society makes an appeal to churches, service clubs and individuals throughout Huron for Christmas assistance in the form of new or good used toys, gifts, clothing and monetary donations for families and children throughout the county. Although CAS co-ordinates the campaign, each town has a co-ordinator of its own. The co-ordinators spend the week of December 8 - 12 sorting the donations into age groups, etc. The following week, the mothers come in and make selections for their children. The CTRDA awarded almost $190,000. to applicants from across Canada. The association supported fiye scholarships. These scholars supported will be working in Dalhousie University at Halifax, the ' University of Manitoba at Winnipeg, McGill University at Montreal, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and the University of Western Ontario at London. The CTRDA supported 14 operating grants with the research work being carried out on a variety of topics in university medical schools extending from the Memorial University Medical School in 'St. John's, Newfoundland to the University of British Columbia Medical School The local associations in Ontario through their Christmas Seal fund raising support research approved by - the CTRDA as well as supporting research in Ontario through the Ontario Lung Association and its medical advisory group, the Ontario Thoracic Society. The total allotment of funds from the Ontario provincial office amounts to $198,000. Four university medical schools in Ontarig are receiving continuing support for research in their pulmonary units. The Ontario Lung Association through its Thoracic Society Research Committee approved 12 applications for research projects that vary from basic research to studies regarding the effectiveness of certain drugs in clinical practice. The long term investment in research relating to pulmonary disease will help solve problems related to such conditions as chronic bronchitis, emphysema and asthma. Ph. 527-1010 SEAFORTH The The Sacrament of the Sick was offered to those who wanted it at services at St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church in Brussels on Sunday. The church considers -the sacrament an expression of God's concern for the sick and a person does not have to be in great danger of death to receive it. The sacrament is a name for the Extreme Unction. A church pamphlet says the name was changed so that the anointment wouldn't be associated only with death and dying. "Previously we called the priest only when the sick person was dying, and thus the sacrament became a frightening Cathy Madill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Madill of Blyth was chosen runner-up at the Ontario Pork Hostess competition at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. Cathy, who represented Huron County after winning the Huron title in Seaforth this summer, was one of eight contestants for the crown. The winner was Marilyn Dale of Woodstock who was Cathy's, roommate during the two-day stay in Toronto. Cathy was one of two runner-ups chosen by the judges. The girls went to Toronto on Friday where they worked in the Ontario Pork Producers Associa- tion booth at the fair, handing out publicity information.
