M iss Davidson says that young children snack a lot and. may not be hungry enough to eat their meals where they would normally get protein. Protein Deficient Women over 65 are also protein deficient and don't get enough calcium, which probably means that they don't drink enough milk, a source of both nutrients. Pour yourself a glass of skim or 2% milk, if you are worried' about calories, Miss Davidson told her audience. Diet deficiencies get worse as people grow older. Poor eating habits may not show up for 10 or 20 years, the nutritionist says, and her department is trying hard to promote good eating habits in small children. Nutritionists are working with nearly half the population is nd most of us spend need to on food, we getting adequate of men and women 39 age group are Marnie Davidson, a ith the provincial f health, told about Seaforth Thursday. n's talk on nutrition several around the ored by the Huron h unit. ion can prevent a lot problems, Miss d, and the province ducate people about e of what they eat. , nursing director of nit says they would ull time nutritionist he county. dison, who is a a large area of the about 12 of the 44 nursery school and primary in Ontario have a school teachers to develop on staff. The chocolate bars, french fries and pop and chips should come out of the school cafeterias so that what is being sold reinforces what's being taught in the classroom, Miss Davidson says. Kids are told in health classes that smoking is bad and we don't put cigarette vending machines in the schools just so they'll have freedom of choice, Miss Davidson said. The same thing should apply to junk food. The Toronto nufriltion consultant attended a meeting with school cafeteria operators from Hiiron County, along with board of education and health unit people in Clinton last week. It was just a discussion and nothing was decided but it was useful to hear each other's point of view, she said. More Co-Ordination M s Davidson agreed that there should be more co-ordination between nutrition programs and the Department of Agriculture's 4-H and extension programs, so that both branches are educating people about the importance of good eating habits. But it's very difficult to get in touch with various departments within the government, she said. \ A 4-H leader and Women's Institute member at the meeting said their programs do teach sound nutrition. The current 4-H program on making rolls and bread talks about whole wheat and mixed grains as well as white bread. If Huron had its own nutritionist she could work with the schools and existing organization to inform the public and improve everyone's eating habits, Miss Davidson and Mrs. Thind said. The percentage of Canadians who are overweight in the over 39 age group continues to climb until 85 percent of women over 65 are Occ overweight. The figures come om a recent Nutrition Canada survey. The intere Canadians an Davidson sai who are too alories per are normal ieople of all a the same nu less, than t counterparts. Real Cause 0 Only six per cent of all Canadians do some regular daily physical activity, and that, not ivereating, is the real cause of iverweight, Miss Davidson said. "That's one thing I feel is' 'tong with groups like hightwatchers and Counter- eight; they don't emphasize 'hysical activity enough. Itching calories is only half the battle." Whether they 'are overweight I net, many Canadians' are not '!Oting enough of certain nutrients to keep themselves healthy, the Nutrition Canada 1)tvey pointed out. The average family spends about $1000 more than this but still doesn't eat well, Miss Davidson said. Shop carefully and read labels, she advised. With food shopping getting more complicated and expensive, she thinks people are paying more attention to nutrition. "When sugar is listed first or second on a cereal label, you should probably put it back on the shelf", she suggested. Kids like to eat the sugar coated cereal as a snack and they can be just as bad for them as candies or, chocolate bars. Even the so-called health cereals like Harvest Crunch have a lot of sugar in them.- In a question and answer session with those at the meeting Miss Davidson said she doesn't agree with the trend to giving babies solid food when they are very young They can't break down solids until they are two to four months old, but they learn to like that "full feeling". A fat baby will . probably struggle with fat for the rest of his life, she said. Kids go through a chubby period when they are 10 - 12 because their bodies are getting ready for a big growth spurt that will come right after that age, she said. "What can we give our grandchildren fat treats rather than all this junk food?" one grandmother asked. A Good Hug "A good hug", Miss Davidson suggested, adding that kids like attention better than something to eat. If you want to give them food, try fresh fruit or vegetables or a bran muffin, she said. White bread isn't as good for you as whole wheat or brown, Miss Davidson said. The nutrients go when the flour is refined and some, but not all of them are added back into enriched white bread. White bread doesn't have any of the fibre or roughage that our diet needs. Brown bread isn't any higher in calories, which makes her conclude that white bread really is a waste of money, Miss Davidson told one questioner. The Canadian government is investigating the fact that sodium nitrite, used in bacon and luncheon meats, causes cancer in rats and "will take it off the market if they find it's harmful to humans," she assured her audience. Try spinach in your salads, she suggested' to one lady who has trouble digesting lettuce. Brussels Stockyard Report The market at Brussels Stock- yards last Friday consisted mainly of grass cattle, and a heavy. supply of cows. There were not sufficient number of fat cattle to establish a firm price. The best steer ,was consigned by Raymond Weber of. Wallenstein and sold for 49.00, with the best lot of 8 heifers consigned . by Doug McPherson of Wingham averag- ing 927 lbs. sold fot 44.25. The choice yearling steers traded_ at 44.00 with the yearling heifers selling too a high of 35.00. Choice cows -20 to 22.50. Good Cows -17.00 to 20.00. Bulls traded to 24.00. The pig market was very active. 30 to 40 lb. pigs traded to a high of 53.70. 40 to 50 lb pigs traded to a high of 63M0. 50 to 60 lb pigs traded to a high of 73.25. Spinach is a good source of iron, vitamin. A and folic acid, A good rule of thumb if you want to eat more Vitamin A, which most of us are deficient in, is that the greener or the oranget a vegetable is, the more Vitamin it has. The nutrient content in commercially frozen and canned food is about the same as in fresh, the nutritionist said. More vitamins are probably lost in home processing, she said. Although Huron doesn't have its own nutritionist, people with questions about food can call their local public health nurse, the health unit's director of nursing said. "If she doesn't know the answers, she'll get therh for you," Mrs. Thind said. After Miss Davidson answered questions the audience was offered an apple and a cup of coffee for lunch.
