Barbara Miller of IL R.3,
Exeter, received the top honOr at
the 28th annual Huron. County
441 Achievement night at Central
Huron Secondary School Friday,
In this International. Women's
Year it is apropos that the 18-year
old student of Optometry at
Waterloo University should be
named a-round 4-H
member. She is following a family
tradition as her brother, Brian,
received the top honor four yeks
ago.
Miss Miller was awarded the
Robert McKinley citizenship
trophy for outstanding partici-
pation in 4-H home and
community activities, and the
Huron Soil and Crop
Improvement Association award
for outstanding achievement in
4.11 field crop clubs. She has
completed 20 projects and has
been active on the 4-H youth
council.
Len MacGregor, extension
assistant, for Huron County with
the ministry of agriculture and
food, co-ordinated the event in
which $1,100 in cash and certifi-
cates, pins and plaques were
awarded to the members, of '28
clubs.
Mr. MacGregor reported 92 per
cent completion by the 379 club
members participating this year
in the 478 projects.
Rob Stewart, R.R.1, Hensall,
received the C.S.MacNaughton
trophy for having the highest 4-FI
score in the county --938 out of
1000. He received the Canadian
Canners trophy for the highest
score in the Exeter sweet corn
club,
Warden's Award
The Warden's novice award
went to first-year member Carol
Dougall, R.R.3, Exeter, with
highest score in the first year.
Ruth Alton, R.R.2, Lucknow,
won the J.A,Anstett award for the
highest score in the 4-H beef
clubs, the Huron Hereford
Association award for the highest
4-H score excluding score on
Hereford calf; and the Huron
Milk Committee award as high
dairy judge.
As the highest scorer in 4-H
dairy clubs, Diana Brand of
R.R.3, Clinton, received the
Canadian Imperial. Bank of
Commerce award.
Mark Harding of R.R.1, Gorrie,
was awarded the Huron Pork.
Producers Association trophy for
the highest score in 4-H swine
clubs •and for being a first, year
member he received the Bank of
Montreal, Clinton. Byanch, award.
Another double-award winner
was Marguerite Snell, R.R.1,
Clinton, winning , the John
Franken Memorial "Trophy for the
highest score in 4-H horse clubs
and the. Jack Riddell trophy as
champion 4-H sheep showman.
Dairy Showman
Oscar Meier, R.R.4, Brussels,
won'the Cliff McNeil trophy with
his champion 4-H Holstein calf
and the A.Y.McLean trophy as
champion 4-H dairy showman.
With her champion 4-H gilt,
Janis VanVliet of R.R.4, Brussels
received the Canadian Imperial
Bank of Commerce award.
All-round 'showman was John
VanVliet of R.R.2,. Brussels, who
received the Toronto Dominion
Bank award, and the Victoria and
Grey Trust Company award as
champion 4-H swine showman.
Brian Pym, R.R.1, Centralia,
;was champion 4-H beef showman
and won the Murray Gaunt
award.
Elaine Pym, R.R.1, Centralia,
with her champion 4-H Hereford
calf won the Huron Hereford
Association trophy.
The Stewart Procter award for
champion Shorthorn steer went to
Don Procter, R.R.5, Brussels, &-
grandson of the man the award
commemorates.
r Another double-award winner
was Lynn Miller, R.R.1,
Lucknow, winning the Old Mill
Award with the highest score in
the sheep clubs, and the
Canadian National Exhibition
shield as high novice judge.
John Hamilton, R.R.2, Staffa,
with his champion 4-H fleece
exhibit won the Canadian
Co-Operative Wool Growers
award.
Jim Nivins, R.R.3, Auburn,
with the highest score in the
tractor clubs, won the Vincent
Farm Equipment trophy and Bill
Armstrong, R.R.4, Wingham,
with the highest score in the
Plowmen's Club, won the Jim
Armitrong award.
Double-award winner Jeff
Allan of R.R.1, Brucefield,
winning the Russell Bolton
Trophy, had the championship
corn exhibit, and with his
championship white bean exhibit
he won the Cook Division of
Gerbo Corporation trophy.
Rick Fines, R.R.1, Bluevale,
won the W.G.Thompson and
Sons, Ltd. trophy with his
championship grain exhibit and
Bobby Inglis of R.R.1, Clifford,
won the Inter-club 4-H Maple
Syrup trophy with his exhibit.
Giena and Don Datema of
R.R.1, Auburn, built the
championship 4-H gate sign' to
win the Hallrice Farms trophy.
Club award winners were: Fran
Logtenberg, R.R.7, Dungannon,
all-round member in Dungannon
4-H calf club; Paul and Ed.
Franken, both of R.R.2, Auburn,
were top horse showmen and top
pony showmen respectively in the
North Huron Trailblazers. Club,
and Brian Fidon, R. R. 1 ,
Belgrave, was top colt showman;
Lesley Hill, R.R.1, Brucefield,
had the highest score in the
Exeter Horse and Pony Club; and
Patricia Muegge of Seaford' was
the equitation winner in the
Seaforth Silver Spurs Club.
In "the judging competition
awards; Barry Miller of R.R.3,
Exeter, won the Blatchford Feeds
Limited trophy for having the
highest score; Jim Fairies of
Gorrie won the C.1.L. trophy as
high swine judge; Paul Drennan
of Dungannon, was awarded the
Cyanamid of Canada award as
high sheep judge; Dave

Rural and village councillors at
the meeting were asked to tell the
public about the apartments.
"We wanted the neighbouring
municipalities to be
knowledgeable when people ask
them about accommodation
there," Brussels reeve Jack
McCutcheon said.
, Application forms for
apartments in the new building
are available from the clerks of
the village and of Morris and
Grey. The open house will be held
soon, so that people can see the
layouts for themselves, Reeve
McCutcheon said.
McWhinney of Lucknow received
the Huron County Beef
Improvement Association award
as high beef judge; and Rose
Marie Flynn, R.R.4, Clinton, was
presented with the Winston
Powell award as high horse
judge.
Receiving certificates for 15
years of voluntary service were
club leaders: Gordan Papple of
Seaforth and Toni Bern of
R.R.1, Woodham and for 10
years: Fred Uhler, of R-10,
Walton and Bob McNeil of R,R.6,
Goderich.
Smiles
"My what a strange looking
cow," exclaimed the city dweller
to the farmer. "Howcome it
hasn't any of those big horns?"
"There are many reasons,"
replied the farmer, quietly,
"Some cows don't have there
until later in life. Others have.
them removed, while other
breeds are born without horns.
That particular cow doesn't h ave
horns because it's a horse."
Sign on the wall in a
veterinarian's office: "The next
time you call your dog a dumb
animal, remember who he's got
working to support him."
