Sitting here alone I wonder how
I am going to write down on paper,
my feelings about friendship. '
Sure, everyone has friends, but
how many people can sit down
and say to themselves that they
have friends who would do
anything for them. Too few, I am
afraid. Bruce Hutchinson, one of
our Canadian writers, is right
when he concludes that nothing of
impor tance in life is definable.
No one can define a friend, for
true friends are like jewels; they
may be beautiful on the outside
but if the inside isn't pure gem
they are not genuine. Everybody
in the world, without exception,
needs a friend. Someone they can
count on, someone who will lend a
helping hand ,when times are
rough and who will have a
shoulder to cry on when you are in
despair.130ing human, we have a
tendency to put ourselves ahead
of others. This is one obstacle that
must be overcome.
A true friend
is one who takes the time to
listen, for listening is a fine art,
slowly but surely becoming ex-
tinct. It is so easy to talk about
you problenis when you know
someone is genuinely interested
and wants to help. A friend is one
who is there when needed and
will stand by you at all times.
I have just written a few
Inside Howick Central Madill Editor writes on. friendship This year at. Howick we have
somthing different. We have Mr.
Farnell's room, working with
marionnettes. The marionnettes
belong to Darlene McGrath. 'Th4
are made by Darlene's grand-
mother. There are three marion-
nettes; one boy, one girl and one
dog. These marionnettes are very
detailed. The boy has thick
orange hair, ears, and rosy
cheeks. The "girl has thick yellow
hair braids and a pink dress, the
face is the same as the boy's but
with a girlish look in it. The dog is
white and furry and can lift his
ears and wagIbis tail. The work is
very excellent and beautiful.
Darlene's marionnettes have
been busy entertaining the stu-
dents in the primary grades. The
marionnettes have a realistic look
and movement. Darlene's
marionnettes will be kept busy
entertaining for a little while
longer yet.

Cross Country Race
Yesterday, October 15th, there
was a Cross Country Race bet-
!! ween teachers and students. In
9 last period all the students went
outside to cheer on their favour-
ites. Hard running was done by
the students to keep teachers
from winning. Also teachers tried
hard to win. Even though the
teachers tried hard, the girls led
BPS kids
selling bars
them, The boY\s, slowed down
from having to run around the
Community Centre but they did
well. First place winner was Rhea
Behrns, second, Laurel Dane,
then Donna Powell. The students
won with 683 points and the
teachers loSt with 574 points. As. I
was watching I was sure everyone
was trying their hardest to win.

Trip to Clinton
Last Wednesday on October
8th, the Grade Eights and some of
Grade Sevens went to Clinton
High School to see the "Canadian
Brass". This group consisted of
five men who played trombone, 2
trumpets, tuba and french horn.
Each of them had an older
instrument to represent the ones
they played. For the horns they
had a very small piccolo trumpet
for instance. Also, they had a
conch shell and a bull's horn.
Many schools were there to see
them. They were very interesting
and we enjoyed them very much.

Volley Ball Try Outs _
The volley ball try-outs at
Howick Central are to start in the
very near future. Mr. Livermore„
the coach, hopes to have as good
or a better team than he has had
other years, so good luck to those
who are trying out for this team.

thoughts that make me think of a
movie I saw on television called
'Bryan's Song'. It was the story of
two football players. One was.
Negro, the other was white. The
story followed the friendship
between these two from the day
they met until the day the latter
died. The relationship between
these two men was open to
ridicule, but they stuck together
through good times and hard
times, ever ready, ever under-
standing of each other.
Where would this world be
without friendship? Friends are
as necessary, to me anyway, as
the air that I breathe. It means a
lot to me to be able to laugh and
share good times and bad times,
and to be able to help if I am
needed. The look of gratitude on
the face of someone you have
been able to help is more than r
enough of a reward for the extra '
time or attention you have 'given
them. To be able to share secrets,
and be able to trust someone is a
blessing in itself. But friends are
not possessions. They must be
shared and treated with love and
respect. Friends can be like wine,
improving as they get older, or, if
treated unjustly, they could turn
on you. Don't let this happen.
I am not an expert in the field of
human relations or any such thing
and .I don't profess to be, but .I do
