Redecorating budget blues? Cheer
up ...little rugs can save the day!
A value-conscious consumer
What can you do if your
home needs some urgent
redecorating but your
household budget won't
allow you to splurge?
First of all, don't des-
pair. Decorate with small
area rugs! •
Thanks to an almost un-
limited choice of synthet-
ic fibers, a rainbow of dec-
orator colors, exciting new
designs and reasonable
prices, small rugs can be-
come a versatile, attrac-
tive ally in your home dec-
orating scheme.
Small rugs are no longer
the functional mud-and-
dirt catchers of yester-
year that we used to call
throws. In .fact, this fall's
home-fashion forecast will
find more and more home-
makers opting for small
decorator rugs to add tex-
tural interest, coziness,
color and warmth to floors,
furnishings and walls — in
every room of the house.
Experts from the Eureka
Home Care Institute have
compiled some pointers to
help you obtain that "dec-
orator look" with well-
placed throw rugs — with-
out straining your house-
hold budget.
Bright and bold
Be arty. Decorate a
a plain-Jane or problem
wall with a bright, bold
pattern. Use it as a focal
point for the rest of your
furnishings. ,
Hang a solid-colored rug
on the family room wall
and use it as a backdrop
for the display of art
prints or photographs.
A soft, plush rug makes
an excellent "throw" for
a sofa or your favorite
easy chair. It's comfort-
able, too!
Want to break the mo-
notony of yards and yards
of wall-to-wall carpeting?
Accent it with a circular
cowhide throw or one of
the new Scandinavian or
Oriental patterned rugs
for an interesting con-
trast. You can also place
these rugs under the cof-
fee table or in front of the
sofa or chair.
Experiment with color.
Strong, brightly colored
rugs add warmth and cozi-
ness to a room, while pas-
tels and neutral shades
provide a more tranquil
mood.
Instead of straining
your budget to replace
that worn-out carpeting
in high-traffic areas or in
front of dad's favorite
easy chair, camouflage the
damage with a throw rug.
Should you tire of it, or
recarpet, you can always
use it as an attractive wall
decoration.
Caring for throw rugs
is no problem. When your
vacuum cleaner comes out
for its regular chores, use
it for all surrounding car-
peted areas. Be sure to re-
set your Rugulator or Dial-
a-Nap carpet height ad-
justment controls for the
correct reading:
If your rug is a small
one, set the vacuum's mo-
tor speed at low, so the
cleaner doesn't pick up
the rug along with the
dirt.
