A new study has found that people who drove to work were exposed to more than twice as much carbon monoxide as those who. rode the rails. The . study is part of a series being undertaken in order to see that people are adequately protected from carbon monoxide pollution. Carbon, when inhaled, replaces vital oxygen in the blood--a particular danger for people with cariovascular disease. This investigation involved 62 nonsmoking volunteers who are not occupationally exposed to cat bon monoxide, 'who come from different geographical areas, and whose! differing methods of getting to work. Personal ex. posure to the pollutant was mea- sured by equipping the volun- teers with portable carbon monoxide samplers. The volun teers carried these monitors with them for three to five days dur. ing both community and working hours. The exposure readings were compared to those from stationary monitors. Besides the not unexpected finding that the people in pet. vate automobiles breathed a lot more carbon monoxide than did those in mass rail transit, the study found that the stationary monitors. significantly underpte. diet one-hour personal carbon monoxide exposures. Fortunate.. ly, the -volunteers in this study were in high-automobile corn. miners received a total exposure exceeding The national air quality standard.
