Yo

Almost
everyone
in town
sees
ours!
Your local newspaper's prime function is
to present the news . . . honestly and fully.
That's all. HOwever, sometimes the report-
ing goes astray, when the news is printed.
Some of our friends think this is amusing.
Some don't. We at your local newspaper
don't laugh easily when a mistake is made
in your local paper.
But in spite of our best .efforts, 'it does
happen occasionally. Even the editor had to
smile when this caption appeared in his
newspaper under the picture of a fallen tree:
The tree downed at this home
damaged spouting and shingles . . .
it was snapped by a violent Attest.
In another newspaper, the coronation of a
high, school beauty queen took an unusual
turn when , the proofreaders overlooked
this one:
Queen Margie White was escorted to
her throne by co-captains Jim 8fack
and Frank Gruff. There she was
presented with roses and drowned.
Sometimes the classified ads are full of
surprises, too. The young lady who ran this
advertisement is, still wishing that her
friends would let her forget it:
I
Wanted: Large well-fumishod room
by young woman about fifteen
feet square.
Then there was the time one of our , nice
Iowa ladies, trying to do her part ,to, add
to the Christmas spirit of her home city,
found her efforts recorded thus:,
Mrs. X set up a :dill life composi-
tion of angel figu Ines and greenery
entitled, ,"Nark the Herold Angels
Sin.".
SO, when you see one like this:
1 The Rotary male quartet will sing,
i' 1'1 need three every hour . , ."
Or this:
I
,,
I am now in pdsition to hatch
your eggs at five cents per egg . ..
Please remember that local newspapers are
regarded ,by readers as a friend they can't
do Without, and even a good friend is btfund
to Make a mistake once in a while.

Over 800 people filled St.
John's United Church, Stratford,
to overflowing on Sunday evening
to take part in the London
Conference World Mission
Festival and to hear Dr. Robert
McClure.
Dr. McClure, a missionary
doctor, and former Moderator of
the United Church, stated that he
onsidered himself a channel
hrough which he caned out work
sponsored and maintained by our
upport. He went on our behalf
nd everything he needed to do
he necessary work was always
supplied because we had
supported the missions at home.
When he and his wife returned
o Canada 14 months ago, they
felt as if a cloud of pessimism had
settled over Canada which wasn't
over the 3rd World. Pessimism
leads to paralysis so we should
become more optimistic and start
rung something to improve
orselves, he said.
Re stated three ways the 3rd
World countries were ahead of
0, and helping themselves.
In North Borneo he said the
Green Revolution is working. It
takes 500 lbs. of rice to feed one
persona day per year and at one,
lime families could not grow
enough rice for their families.

of us is in family Planning. We sit

They accept Family planning in

is not done by T.V., RAdio or
Newspapers, but by person to
person contact.
Health Services, Public Health
Clinics, Child Health Clinics to
name a few is the third way they
are years ahead of Canada. In
North Borneo his 77 bed hospital
served a population of 74,000 with
only one lab and X-ray
department and 8" clinics.
There are no roads to get to it,
all travel was done on the water.
He compared this to our Health
Services - 1 Doctor for every 500
people in cities like Toronto and
also the amount per day to stay in
these hospitals. A doctor in the
3rd World countries only sees the
patients passed on by the trained
hospital assistants who look after
the cli nic,. He felt we have, to
learn from these countries.
Twenty-five years ago, Dr.
McClure said Singapore was one of
the dirtiest cities in the world.
Today it is the cleanest.
In 1971, when he visited there,
there was a $50.00 fine on the
spot for littering. There was a
$200.00 fine for not wearing
safety belts in the car, and the 55
m.p.h. speed li mit was strictly
enforced, Thesewerenot enforced
by the local police, but by high
school students on their motor
bikes and these were strictly
enforced.

them 5 years to improve our
nation and he felt they could do it.
DaitClure ended his talk by
asking is all to join with our
brothers and sisters of the 3rd
