1 10th anniversary held at Duff'

In the evening Worship began

assisted by Ken Scott with his

"Nearer, My God, To Thee" and
the Anthem sung by the Choir
We humans are about 60 per
cent water: the thought is enough
to make y ou weep for weeks.
Well, actually, anywhere from
40 to 65 per cent of the total body
weight of a 154 lb. (70 Kg.)
person is made up of water -- with
thinner people having higher
percentages than heavier folk;
and females generally having a
lower percentage of water than
males.
But be proud of your liquid
assets. A glance at the prune will
serve to remind you of the
importance of our body fluid
content.
Under normal climatic
conditions, the body needs to 'take
in approximately 101/2 glasses
(21/2 litres) of water a day.It gets
rid of most of that,: about 61/2
glasses (11/2 litres) in the form of
urine. In hotter weather, of
course, more water is needed to
replenish that lost through
perspiration: In any season,
approximately 15 per cent of the
body's water output is lost simply
in the air that is breathed out.
But this whole business of
water coming in and going out is
more than a mere exercise, like
bailing out a boat in a rainstorm.
Water in the body has a great
deal of important work to do.
The regulation of water in the
system is controlled primarily by
the kidnys, with electrolytes such
as potassium chloride and sodium
playing an important tole.
Sodium chloride, one of the major
body chemicals, is the same as
common table salt. Potassium is
found in nuts -- peanuts, almonds
and Brazil nuts; fruit -- dates,
bananas, plums, raisins;
vegetables -- carrots, radishes,
potatoes; fish; and whole grains.
Amounts of water in the body
are regulated by the so-called
electrolyte balance in which the
chemicals and water work
together: if we don't take in
enough fluid and electrolytes
when We're perspiring, for
example, heat stroke may result
because the body electrolytes are
thrown out of whack.
Water, together with' various
chemicals, also helps regulate
and maintain the normal acid and
alkaline state Of the blood. Also,
body Waste prod pets are present
in the large amount of water
excreted by the healthy kidneys.
However, it doesn't folio* that

Drinking large amounts of water
really only adds weight and
overtaxes the kidneys. Unless

of water, moderation -- as with
more potent liquids -- is probably
the best course.
