Dim future for the. Grand Canypn
Hur-ry, hur-ry, hur-ry, folks!
Get your last clear look at one of
nature's grealest wonders the
Grand Canyon. Before air
pollution dims the view.
That's the prediction based on
air-quality monitoring devices on
the rim, of the canyon. . The
devices show a definite increase
in particles during the past three
years. Particles carried on the
wind from cities hundreds of
miles away.
Now it's going to get a lot
Worse. Within a hundred-mile
radius of 'the Grand Canyon, six
enormous coal-burning power
plants either are being built or are
already in use. One of them is just
north of the canyon - the largest
power plant in the world!'

achieve federal air quality -
standards, which some observers
doubt, at least a small percentage
of pollutants will escape. Sulfur
oxides, h ydrocarbons, nitrogen
oxides, particulates -- substances
that are transformed, in the air
into other harmful compounds,
No one really knows what harm,
will befall our natural treasures.
But it is almost certain that the
contaminants ultimately will veil
the exquisite clarity and muddy
the subtle coloring of one of our
most precious legacies.
Of course we need energy. But
