If the site is approved, three
copies of detailed plans of the
pond and dam structures have to
be sent to the local office of the
Ministry of Natural Resources.
Mr. Brant advises that -it may be
necessary to have an engineer's
help to design plans.The plans
are then sent to Toronto for
evaluation and final approval.
Uf they are approved, copies will
be returned and construction can
begin immediately. The
application procedure may take
anywhere up to six months if
problems are encountered, so be
sure to apply early.
The district and county offices
of either the Ministry of
Agriculture and Food or the
Ministry of Natural Resources can
be contacted if questions or
problems arise.

A farni pond provides water for
livestock and can be used for
irrigation, as well as being a
source of recreation. But the
construction of a farm pond is an
expensive venture,
J.E.Brubaker, agricultural
engineer with the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and Food,
says: "The cost Could run
anywhere from several thousand
to $20,000, depending on the size
'and type of pond constructed.' ' In
addition, once the pond has been
built, there will be maintenance,
,costs. The growth of weeds and
algae may have to be controlled;
it might be necessary to shore up
the pond's edges and the dam if
erosion becomes a problem.
The best time to build is in
summer or early fall, but before
you even begin to think about
;t ,I.Lcuction, there are a number
of things that must be done.
"Keep in mind that plans for
the construction of all farm ponds
connected to streams must be
approved by the Ontario Ministry
of Natural Resources," states
J.A.Rryant, Assistant Land
Supervisor at the Cambridge
office of the Ministry. "An
application to build, containing
such inform'ation as the type of
construction proposed, flood
areas, and the location Of the
stream and pond must be tiled
with the local diStrict office."
These applications' are available'
.at district offices of the Ministry
:of Natural Resources.
A rough sketch of the pond and
adjacent. property (navies and
addresSes of (*tiers) should
. accompany the application. Upon
receipt of the sketch and
application, the Ministry of
NattiralTieSourceS will Carry Out a
site inspection and give tentative
approval or suggestions for
