But the construction of a farm pond is an expensive venture, J.E.Brubaker, agricultural engineer with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, says: "The cost Could run anywhere from several thousand to $20,000, depending on the size 'and type of pond constructed.' ' In addition, once the pond has been built, there will be maintenance, ,costs. The growth of weeds and algae may have to be controlled; it might be necessary to shore up the pond's edges and the dam if erosion becomes a problem. The best time to build is in summer or early fall, but before you even begin to think about ;t ,I.Lcuction, there are a number of things that must be done. "Keep in mind that plans for the construction of all farm ponds connected to streams must be approved by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources," states J.A.Rryant, Assistant Land Supervisor at the Cambridge office of the Ministry. "An application to build, containing such inform'ation as the type of construction proposed, flood areas, and the location Of the stream and pond must be tiled with the local diStrict office." These applications' are available' .at district offices of the Ministry :of Natural Resources. A rough sketch of the pond and adjacent. property (navies and addresSes of (*tiers) should . accompany the application.
