Dieting
made
delicious
Spring is a good time to shed a
few extra pounds along with the
heavy clothes. If you haven't
discovered a quick and easy way
to lose weight, stop looking.
There are no miraculous short
cuts to dieting; no magic tricks
that will eat away fat.
The energy from food is
measured as heat and expressed
in units called "calories": In'
order to lose one pound of fat,
your body must do without 3500
calories. Since weight loss results
when there is-a deficit in energy,
i.e. greater energy output than
energy input,,, this means a
reduced caloric intake and/or
increased exercise: Reducing the
caloric intake implies a more
careful selection of foods 'since
nutrients must be obtained from a
regime of fewer calories.
Some of the first-foods to "go"
on 'a reducing diet are pastries
and rich • desserts. These, items
just teem with calories. For
example,, a good-sized portion of'
a two-layer cake with chocolate
icing contains about 500 calories.
A piece of apple pie (1/6 of a 9
inch 2-crust pie) contains about
400 calories - without added ice
cream or cheese. Getting along
without 500 calories each day for
a week should enable you to lOse
about one pound.
Rather than completely
eliminate dessert, a sensible
dieter substitutes fresh fruit to
provide much needed vitamins,
minerals and bulk for generally
less than 10.0 calories per serving:
There' are some days, however,
when even the most luscious fruit
cannot replace a dessert. On
those days why not let the'
desserts developed by Food
Advisory Services; Agriculture
Canada serve as a compromise?
Both of the desserts Contain skim
milk povvder i ,Which contributesd
protein, ribofiaVin, calcium and
phosphorus to your diet. Each
dessert provides less than 100
calories per serving. Most
important of all, taste panels
(the
up of non-dieters judged
)the dessertS to be tasty. So go
ahead and indUlgel
