Michael Dewan, principal of St. Joseph's School, Stratford, and spokesman for the metric curriculum committee set up by the board, outlined progress to date. The ten members oft the committee who attended thei meeting for the presentation of the report are: Primary - Mrs. Terry Pearson, Our Lady of Mount Carmel. School, Dashwood; Sister Louise Lowry, Principal, St. Boniface School, Zurich and Mks. Joan Murray, St. Columban School. Junior - Ennis Murphy, Principal, St. pjatrick's School , Kinkora; Mr. Dewan; Mrs. Margaret Suplat, St. Boniface School, Zurich; and Joseph McDonald, St. Patrick's ; School, Kinkora. ' Intermediate - Adrian Pontsioen, Principal, St. Joseph's School, Clinton; Paul Zybura ,St. Michael's School, Stratford; and Miss Roberta Stemp, St. Mlary's ; School, Goderich. 1 John Vintar, Director of Education, is on the committee and M. J. Liebovitz, Curriculum Service Officer, Pure and Applied Science, Ministry of Education, worked with them. ' Mr. Liebovitz commended the committee for the progress they made which has put them in the forefront in Midwestern Ontario District for preparing their schools for the changeover. He said the Canadian Government has set 1980 as the target date for the completion of Canada's metric conversion program and the Ontario Ministry of Education along with other provincial departments of education has set June 1978. or sooner as the dateline. Hb explained that we are presently ; predominantly Imperial measurement. , Mr. Dewan said the metric ' ; system will be introduced in all grades ofthe 19 separate schools by September 1.976 and in use exclusively by June 1978. ' Mr. Dewan said awareness ; workshops for staff will be held May 30 and starting in September intensive in-service workshops : and implementation in math- ) measurement area in primary and I intermediate classes and as pilot 1 1 'projects in junior classes. Kippen Trustee Michael Connolly said, "Now I can see the 1 . need for professional development days!" Jack Lane, Business Administrator, said the metric kits for each school will cost about $75 in the priary diVision and $100 in the intermediate division for a total of about $2,850 in the 19 I schools: Hie said the government is proposing to pay a grant of 75 'cents per pupil to help with these costs.
