in Huron so far
By Nancy Andrews •
Already 24 cases of rabies have
een reported in Huron County in
975, Dr. W. J. Thompson of the
eath of Animals Branch of the
epartment of Agriculture
eaforth says.
Rabies is a virus that has
finally struck fear into the
earts of parents because it is
sully fatal.
Last year there were 39 On-
fried cases of rabies among
hats, which was a decrease
rn 71 cases in 19/3.
The animals that had rabies
st year included 18 bovines, 4
01 9 foxes, 5 skunks and 3 nes,
SO far there has been no known
e of rabies amongst humans M
uron County, People usually
get rabies from their pets that in
turn often get the virus from a -
wild animal.
For this reason, the Health of
Animals Branch in co-operation
with the Huron County Health
Unit is continuing its practise of
sponsoring free anti-rabies
vaccination clines for dogs and
cats in the county.
The clinics will be held from
June 16 to July 4. The clinics will
be held June 16 in Gorrie; June 17
in. Winghatn; June 19 in Blyth,
June 20 in Clinton, June 24 in
Brussels, June 25 in Seaforth,
June 27 in Hensall and July 3 in
Exeter. An announcement will
appear later in the paper as to the
time and place of the clinics.
High yields don't
avert starvation

Ton upon ton of seed grain is
oing int o the soil at this <time
ad every right thinking farmer is
ptimistic that this will be the
ear of high yields and at the
same time high prices, He has to
oink that way or he will get
iscouraged and give up. It
oesn't work very often like that
owever, for if yield is high in our
ountry, it usually is the same in
ther grain producing countries
ad we are faced with an
ver-supply, which in turn has a
depressing effect on prices.
Despite the cries of those that
are really concerned about
eeding the unfortunates of this
orld, high yields and high
supplies do not avert starvation.

giving up his legal practice to

Mr. Maloney will earn $60,000
year and will have job tenure for

The legislation was promised in
is year's Throne Speech, . and
11 be introduced next week. The
egislation will make Ontario the
venth Province in Canada to
as simple hand operated
machinery and irrigation
systems. In that case they could
often feed their families and sell
surpluses to their own country
men for clothing and housing.
If at the same time we give
their countrymen grain at no or
little cost, it ruins their internal
market and our well intentioned
gesture will do more harm than
good. This type of help should be
given, but only in emergencies
arising out of natural disasters.
The cry of some vegetarian
organizations to condemn the
eating of meat because that takes
away grain from the starving in
the world is therefore completely
irresponsible.
Even if no more grain was ,f,4ed

wouldn't put an ounce of bread on

BanglaDesh.. Dr. Bruce Taylor, an
animal scientist at the University
of Arizona has come up with some
interesting figures on beef.
A ton of corn contains 160 lbs.
of cereal protein. This ton
produces 112 lbs. of animal
protein. If you convert this in
utilized protein by the human
body, it comes out exactly the
same at 90 lbs. I would rather eat
meat than corn. How about you?

the Industrial Development Bank,

established in 1944 as a
subsidiary of the Bank of Canada,
makes loans to businesses of all
types for a variety of purposes.
Almost half of the bank's loans
are for $25,000 or less and the
bank is especially interested in
assisting small businesses.
The Advisory Services
Department of the bank publishes
a series of pamphlets on small
business management, provides
information on Federal assistance

Ontario's, agriculture' ministry
is unable to expand its program to
send city teen-agers to farms for
summer visits because there are
not enough farmers willing to
take them, Agriculture Minister
William Stewart Said.
Two of every three young
persons applying for the program
this summer will be -refused
admission to the ministry's junior
agriculturist program, he said.
There were more than 600
applicants but only 200 farmers
were willing to participate.
