HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Brussels Post, 1975-05-14, Page 8Thursday isn't just any day, its
the day the Post comes, or should
I say the Brussels Post, because
that's what it is, Brussels and the
people who live in and around this
lovely rural village. A good
example was April 3rd of this
year. The worst snow storm in
'ears and we couldn't even get to
he post office to get the 'The
Post'. It was sheer disaster at our
house.
There may not be much of
nterest in it some weeks but its
part of our household. I have
,,crapbooks filled with clippings,
r'ictures, articles taken from the
Post for twenty-three years. They
are a small reminder of past
events in Brussels - happy and
sad occasions, because whatever
happens in Brussels involves
everyone. We are a clan in mere
ways than one.. Many former
residents take 'The Post' mainly
because its their one link with
home..
If you don't like what's going
on in council - write the Post. If
you want to preserve our beanti-,
ful Maitland river, write to the
Post. Many residents have taken
this opportunity and at long last
the sewers are coming to
Brussels. We read it in last
week's 'Post',
Recently I had an offer to sell
my Centennial edition of the
Brussels Post to a former resident
at a good profit. No way would. I
part with that paper. Through,
that paper I remember Brussels
on that beautiful weekend. Never
will I forget the crowds of people
oh the street, the churches full on
Sunday, the parade and church
Service in the park arid last of all
If you want to make
ever .,g you do better,
start by
making yourself better.

Missionary speaks about
the India. she knows
Have you. experienced the thrill
of listening, to Margaret Kennedy
speak? Do avail yourself of the
opportunity if she comes your
way. Miss Kennedy, a missionary
in India is home now and is
accepting speaking engagements,
Only the very apathetic could fail
to have a responsive chord
touched by this enthusiastic
personality, the light of love in
her eye, and the dynamic
persuasion of her voice as, she,
with the aid of excellent slides,
describes in vivid detail the
growth of our missionary effort in
that part of India in which she
must be a truly dedicated servant.
Miss Kennedy has been in
India's Bhil area since March
1939 as an evangelistic worker,
chiefly with women. Her large
audience was captivated and
spellbound as she addressed the
Maitland Presbyterian Society in
Knox Presbyterian Church,
Teeswater, on May 5, leading
them eagerly and 'humorously
through the developing years and
growth of the Christian Church in
India, trim the little trickle of
1895 to its present broad scope.
Learn to Read
In the beginning she. taught the
people to read, and to work in
dispensaries led to the setting up
of proper schools, the ordaining
of ministers, followed by the
establishment of hospitals,
babies' homes, and the formation
of Presbyteries as branches of the
Presbyterian Church- in Canada.
Bible Schools griduated learners
who became evangelists and
Women's Fellowship groups were
begun. In 1952 a mobile clinic was '
organized with two Indian nurses
and a driver to start a health
program in the villages. '
Miss Kennedy spoke of the
immense difficulties encountered
in communication because of
great language barriers in dealing
with many millions of people, and
the obstacles presented by the fear
of spirits and witch doctors..She
stressed the effectiveness of
drama as a teaching medium ---
role playing lets them see how
things happen and is more easily
understood than the written or
spoken word in many cases.
Now the Church of North India
has developed with 600,000
Christians. In a population of
550,000,000 there are 12,000,000
Christians in India. Light. and
learning has gone out from the
schools and is shining through
their own pastors, evangelists,
doctors, nurses, teachers, and
drivers. They are learning to
stand alone and to take charge of
themselves, but still need much
help from us to surmount their
many colossal problems. It
behooves us to share our
multitudious blessings with them.
SO, from, a very small beginning
Miss Kennedy has seen great
growth in the Church in India. "It
has enlarged the curtains of its
tent, reached out to other work
than its own, and brought in
others," She has witnessed
people who were off in little
pockets now going out, getting
together, and becoming a part of
the family of God, out of a state of
complete illiteracy to a state of
joyful knowledgeability of the
workings of the Spirit of God in
every phase of daily living. How
great must be the'joy within her
own heart!

Salute to the Post
the choir singing Amazing Grace -
and the beautiful display of
fireworks against the dark sky.
Brussels radiated with happiness
that weekend,
Some day Brussels may be a
big town but I hope it never loses
that feeling kinship which we feel
today. So live on dear Brussels
Post.
