The grower with fields of
cucumbers and no pollinators
faces a real problem. "To avoid
this, assure yourself of a supply of
bees by contacting a beekeeper
now," advises J. K. Muehmer,
horticulturist at the Ridgetown
College of Agricultural Technolo-
gy. "After all, you have now
contracted this year's acreage, so
you can calculate the number of
hives needed.
"The importance of a good
supply of bees to the cucumber
producer cannot be overstressed"
he adds. "Pollen-producing,
normal, old-time cucumbers
make up only 12 to 15 per cent of
the plants in most fields. The rest
of the plants are female and
produce no pollen. Therefore, for
successful pollen transfer, there
must be enough bees to overcome
the frequently uneven distribu-
tion of very few pollen-producing
plants in each field. For proper
pollination, 10 to 15 bee visits per
flower are required."
Don't rely on wild bees to do
the job, because the woods,
headlands and fencerolit where
wild bees live are rapidly disap-
Tuning farm
engines can
save fuel
Farm gasoline and diesel
engines in Ontario use over 100
million gallons of fuel per year. A
small reduction by each engine
could result in subst antial
savings, suggest Agricultural
Engineers of the Ministry of
Agriculture and Food.
Visible black exhaust from a
diesel engine, or black deposits
on the inside of gasoline engine
exhaust pipes, are both indicators
that fuel is being wasted. A
diesel engine that produces• black
smoke is getting too little air or
too much (or podrly vaporized)
fuel, or the engine requires major
repairs. A simple check of the
air-intake system will determine
if obstructions exist. A qualified
diesel technician can test the
injectors for spray pattern and
vaporization, and the pump for
overfuelling.
Carburetor adjustments on
gasoline engines are much simp-
ler and can often be made by the
operator. The operator's manual
usally provides guidelines. Care
must be taken to ensure that the
fuel to air ratio is not too low (too
lean). The result will be
premature valve failure. The
inside of the exhaust pipe should
be gray not white.
To permit optimum carburetor
adjustment, the engine and the
electrical system must be in good
working order. Spark plugs,
ignition points, and condenser
shnuld be adjusted or replaced as
recOmmended by the engine
manufacturer.
Many farm equipment dealers
have a dynamometer which they
use check tractor horsepower.
At, the same time they can
monitor fuel consumption with a
flowmeter. This provides an ideal
opportunity to fine tune) the
engine for fuel economy; without
Sacrificing available horsepower.
A spring tune up for your
tractor will not only assure you a
trouble-free planting Season, but
also help to conserve some of our
natural resource = petroletini,
pearing.
One hive of bees can pollinate"
about 50,000 plants, so the
grower planning to machine
harvest needs one hive for every
acre. However, the grower
planning to hand harvest needs
only one hive for every two to
three acres. Bring bees into the
fields two to three days after the
first flowers are seen.
"Bees don't particularly like
cucumber pollen and they use it
only when there is nothing better
available," says Mr. Muehmer.
"That is why the grower with
clover or other nectar-producing
plants next to his cucumers
usually gets a poor crop. Avoid
this problem by planning your
own fields 'carefully and try to
co-operate with your neighbours
in similar fashion."
