HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Brussels Post, 1975-04-23, Page 3BPS visits Our Visit to the Sugar Bush. On April 17, Grade 3 Went out .to Mr, and Mrs. Doug Machan's 'farm to see 'them making maple syrup. To get ready, we had to wear old clothes and rubber boots. Glen Smith drove us out on the bus. Mr. Machan met us and led, the way through the snowy, muddy field to the sugar bush. We all saw the sap run into the pails. Then Mr. Machan took us into the sugar shanty to see the sap being boiled. He said the sap had to be boiled at 219 degr ees F, When we came out, Mrs. Wilson gave us each a glass. Mrs, Machan gave us all a taste of mapleNsyrup. It was good. She showed us a thermometer and a felt hat that was used to strain the syrup. Then Mr. Machan showed us how to tap a tree. On our walk back to the bus we saw bee hives. Mr. Scott went with us. When we got back we talked about our trip. Karen McCutcheon. Our Trip to. the Sugar Bush Grade 3 went to the sugar bush on 'April 17th. When we were getting ready to go, the teacher told us to wear old clothes and boots. After dinner we lined up to getson the bus. Glen Smith drove the bus and Mr. Scott and Mrs. Wilson came too. We had to walk through mud and deep snow to the bush. Every step the teacher took in the snow, she'd sink down. When we got there, we all wanted to taste the sap. We went into the sugar shanty to see how the maple syrup was boiled. Mrs. Machan showed us the thermo- meter and the felt hat for the maple syrup to go through so it would be clear. Mrs. Machan gave us a taste of the maple syrup when it was all, cooked. Mr. Machan showed us how to tap a A TASTE OF THE SAP — All -the Grade 3 pUpils at Brussels Public School found out how maple.syrup was made and had a taste of sap when they toured the sugar bush at the Machan farm on Thursday. On our way back, we had a little scavenger hunt for different ,things. When we got back to school, Mr. Scott came into. our class and talked about the things we found. June Adams, •To the Sugar Bush On Friday, April 18, the Grade 2 class of Brussels Public School went to a sugar bush at, Grey Central School. Mothers and teachers drove the pupils in their cars. Mr. Axtmann, the principal of Grey Central—School, met us there. He showed us a 'lot of different things. We saw spites and pails hanging on the trees. We also saw a sample of pipe line going from one tree to another., There was a fire on which there was a pan. Three boys were. boiling sap to make maple syrup. Mr. Axtmann gave us straws and Iet us taste sap from the pails. We also got to taste the sweet :maple syrup that-had cooled. It' !was a very exciting and interest- ; mg trip. rh Wendy Martin 'A Trip to the Sugar Bush Friday was a cloudy day but we went to the bush anyway. Mr. Smith took us in the bus. We were happy and excited. We had to 'leave the bus beside the road and walk along the fence to the bush. Mr. and Mrs. Doug Machan met us at the bush. We went into the sugar shanty to see the sap boiling. The syrup boils to 219 degrees F and weights 13 lbs. 3 ,oz. to the gallon. Mrs. Machan showed us the thermometer and the felt hat for cleaning the syrup. We tasted the sap which looked like water but was sweet. We tasted the syrup. It was brown, thick and sticky: We walked around the bush to see the sap dripping into the buckets. Mr. Machan showed us how to tap a ,tree. We really enjoyed our trip to the bush. We hurried back to the bus and got back to the school . in time for recess. All' the way home we sang songs. We want to thank Mr. and Mrs. Machan and. Mr. Smith for a good trip.
