getson the bus. Glen Smith drove
the bus and Mr. Scott and Mrs.

through mud and deep snow to

took in the snow, she'd sink
down. When we got there, we all
wanted to taste the sap. We went
into the sugar shanty to see how

On Friday, April 18, the Grade
2 class of Brussels Public School
went to a sugar bush at, Grey
Central School. Mothers and
teachers drove the pupils in their
cars. Mr. Axtmann, the principal
of Grey Central—School, met us
there. He showed us a 'lot of
different things. We saw spites
and pails hanging on the trees.
We also saw a sample of pipe line
going from one tree to another.,
There was a fire on which there
was a pan. Three boys were.

'A Trip to the Sugar Bush
Friday was a cloudy day but we
went to the bush anyway. Mr.
Smith took us in the bus. We were
happy and excited. We had to
'leave the bus beside the road and
walk along the fence to the bush.
Mr. and Mrs. Doug Machan met
us at the bush. We went into the
sugar shanty to see the sap
boiling. The syrup boils to 219
degrees F and weights 13 lbs. 3
,oz. to the gallon. Mrs. Machan
showed us the thermometer and
the felt hat for cleaning the syrup.
We tasted the sap which looked
like water but was sweet. We
tasted the syrup. It was brown,
thick and sticky: We walked
around the bush to see the sap
dripping into the buckets. Mr.
Machan showed us how to tap a
,tree. We really enjoyed our trip
to the bush. We hurried back to
the bus and got back to the school .
in time for recess. All' the way
home we sang songs.
We want to thank Mr. and Mrs.
Machan and. Mr. Smith for a good
trip.
