second member. George Jutzi
will chair the property committee
which the Reeve . said is
responsible for sidewalks, trees,
village owned buildings and
street lighting. Hank Ten Pas is
the other member.
Policing, local by-laws, animal
control and garbage pick-up is the
responsibility of the protection to
persons' and property committee,
chaired by Councillor Stretton
and including Councillor Jutzi.
Harold Bridge will chair the Fire
Department committee, with
Councillor Ten pas the second
member. Reeve 'McCutcheon
appointed Coun. Stretton as
chairman and Coun. Jutzi as
member of the Parks and
Recreation Committee, which
includes .five members of the
community and looks after the
arena and the ball park.
The finance and equipment
committee which will set the
budget and deal with the
proposed new monthly finandial
statement' will be chaired by
Coun. Ten Pas and include Coun.
Stretton.
The new council did not pass
their Number one by-law, which
hires all village staff and sets
salaries. Salaries for village
employees are now under
discussion. Clerk Bill King,
whose salary was $9,000 in 1974
requested a raise to $11,000 per.
year, citing area clerk salaries
---Blyth, $10,000 in 1974,
Seaforth $12,000 starting salary
for a new clerk and Atwood ,
$10,500. 60% of Mr. King's
salary is paid by the PUC and
40% by the village.
Village employee Harry Crich,
who is presently paid $2.75 an
hour, requested $1.00 an hour
raise.
Council discussed hiring part
time office help for Clerk King,
but no decision was made. An
advertisement for. part time help
in the fall brought 12 applicants.
Six of these were interviewed and
the top three applicants were
voted on by council in December.
Clerk King's wife Joanne won the
elimination vote but no by-law
was passed autorizing her hiring.
-Clerk King told 'Council that part
time work by his wife in the past
had helped him to clear up the
backlog of 'work in the Clerk's
office.
Council accepted the
resignations of Jim Cardiff as its
representative on the Wingham
and District Hospital Board and
George McCutcheon as
representatived to the Maitland
Valley Conservation Authority.

ask those who are interested in
filling these posts to contact the
clerk's office. Both jobs are
voluntary.MVCA members are
paid $25 a day by the Authority
for attending meetings and 15
cents per mile. Brussels council
has in the past paid the Hospital
representative a small amount for
mileage.
Reeve McCutcheon said he
would be willing to take the
MVCA appointment but agreed
with council members that the
general public should be given
the opportunity to apply for both
jobs. Clerk King suggested that it
was an advantage having a
member of council as an
appointee because direct reports
are always available to council.
Last year Brussels contributed
$1173 to the MVCA and
councillors were. concerned about
the lack of expenditure by the
Authority in the village.
"This will give me a chance to
think it over and maybe with-
draw", the Reeve joked.
Council will review applications
for the two appointments, and for
the paid post of Village Building
Inspector at a special meeting
Monday night. Clerk King said
the number one by-law would also
probably be passed at this
meeting, after salaries are set.
Council also discussed hiring
another village workman but no
decision was made.
In general discussion about
local problems, council learned
that the Saturday garbage pick
ups are working well. Brussels
uses the Morris Twp. landfill site
and pays 55% of their fees.
Village employee Harry Crich was
Smith. Second.; Betty Knight,
lead.
2.0d, Don McDonald and rink
with 451/2 points.
3rd. Orval Bauer and rink with.
43 1/2 points.
4th Leslie Knight and rink with
41 points,
asked to unlock the public
washrooms on Saturdays.
Crawford, Mill and Davies
were confirmed as the village
solicitors. A.M.Harper, the.
Goderich chartered accounts firm
will be asked for an estimate on
what the village's accounting bill
will be for 1975. In 1974, Brussels
paid the firm $1,335.
Fred Stephenson was granted a
building permit for a new
dwelling and Ronald
application for a building permit
for a wall in his sales barn was
held for further investigation by
the committee responsible.
A damage claim from Mrs.
Mary McQuarrie who tripped on a
village street was forwarded to
the Village's insurer.
The new council authorized a
partial grant to the village
Recreation Committee of $1,000.
Last year the committee received
$1,500 in council funds and about
the same amount from the
province, Clerk King -said:
