He takes inventory and closes his books preparatory to the tilling out of his tax forms. It has been a year of mixed blessings. High grain prices and low livestock prices. Late plantings because of heavy spring rains and as a consequence corn that didn't mature before an early frost struck. Nothing neW and we are full of hope that this year will .give us good crops again with a reasonable return for our work, our investment in money, labour and anxieties. One of our anxieties has been, and still is, the almost continuing incidence of strikes that has hit our business. The strike at farm implement manufacturers, at the grain handlers, at the packing houses, the meat graders and still Amendments to the dog licens- ing and Live Stock and Poultry Protection Act were announed by the Minister of Agriculture and Food, the Hon. Wm. A. Stewart. Under Bill 143, compensation payments have been extended to include injury to livestock or poultry injured or killed by wolves as well as dogs. Local inutheipalities 'collecting . dog taxes will now pay compensation for both wolf and dog damage while the Government of Ontario Will reimburse municipalities for wolf damage claims paid out. In making the announcement Mr. Stewart .Said, "Through the provisions of this Bill, we have streamlined the procedure whereby a farmer can be compensated for livestock and poultry losses stiStained by wolves or dogs. In a new Part III of the Act which was added by Bill 143, provisions are made for compensation to beekeepers if a colony of honeybees is damaged or destroyed by bears. Payments shall not exceed $50 for the hive equipment and $25 for the honeybees. All claims in this regard would be directed to the Live Stock Commissioner of Ontario. "With the new amendments we feel farmers will be compensated for injuries to livestock or poultry caused by wolves, dogs or crossbreds. Prior to this there was no vehicle available for receiving recompense where hybrid wolves were involved'', added Mr. Stewart.
