A NEW YEAR'S MESSAGE
Pierre Elliott Trudeau
Prime Minister
When we exchange gifts during the holiday season, we are
expressing our feelilngs of affection, esteem and gratitude. We
.are moving closer together, and showing more openly than
usual, our mutual goodwill. We are confirming, in a concrete and
friendly way - perhaps a small way, but nonetheless real - the
ties that unite us with those near and dear to us.
But the presents we give to one another have a further
significance: they are as well the symbol of a universal sharing,
and a reminder of what is a basic necessity to all forms of life.
In effect, no living thing can survive without sharing. This is
true of nature; it is true of human society. All forms of life have
an indispensable ability to give or to receive. What is ecology, if
not the science of natural sharing? And what is ecological
balance, if not the result of an equitable sharing among all
elements of our environment, including human beings? To live is
to share.
• In primitive societies, there was no alternative but to share. In
advanced societies, sharing is the subject of legislation because
the very abundance of goods weakens natural restraints and
increases the likelihood of unfair shares. Even' in such a
privileged country as Canada, we have had to legislate against
inequality in its various forms as severely as would,be necessary
in countries much less privileged than ours.
I invite my fellow citizens to rejoice in what has been given to
us as Canadians: the good fortune to be united in a federation, a
system of government whose most distinct attribute is the:
sharing of wealth.
In future, Canadians are going to be forced by circumstances
into even greater sharing, and this will not be easy; but I know
that we will be equal to the challenge facing the entire country,
and thus each one of us.
It will not be easy, either, to share more, as we have promised,
with less favoured nations, the millions of men, women and
children in the Third World who face hunger and starvation; but
I am sure that our generosity will be worthy of our abundance.
I trust that our longstanding traditions and our present
attitudes will prepare us for these far more pressing demands
that will be made on us in the future, and on which depend - as
we have already seen - the salvation of the human race and the
survival of life on this planet.
We must, nevertheless, be open to the joys of the season. Our
joy, I am sure, will not be superficial, for it is sustained and
kindled b y hopes that are bright. It is in this spirit that I extend
to you my wishes for health and happiness during the new year.
