The Brussels Post, 1975-01-01, Page 4TODAY'S HEALTH (Today's Health is provided to' weekly newspapers by the Ontario Ministry of Health) by David Woods ICS 1111110 right ROW wish the boot cigarette habit, so strongly impli- cated in heart disease. Alcholism In Ontario, alcohol plays a part in half of all auto accidents, accounts for hundreds of thousands of man-hours a year in absenteeism from work, and for more than 10 per cent of all hospital costs. It is estimated that close to 300,000 Ontarians drink enough alcohol to endanger their health. If you think you're one of these, resolve to drink only in moderation, but if you can't do that, you'd be better to quit altogether. Stress and Anxiety - Inevit- abilities of modern living they may be, but too much of either is dangerous. Resolve to recognize your boiling point, and to cool things off not by popping tranqui- lizers, but by getting involved in some activity that will counter balance the pressures. Exercise, relaxing hobbies and yoga are all good antidotes. Resolutions arc easy to make and difficult to keep. As far as your health is concerned, nothing could be . more worth- while that consciously choosing not to risk getting "diseases of choice." But don't attempt to-do it all at once. It may be very noble to try to replace all your health vices with virtues in one fell swoop, but it's almost impossible. Make your resolutions one by one - and stick to them. And have a happy, healthy New Year. It will not smother your lawn if you build it the right way. "Start the rink after the ground has frozen and a -deep layer of snow has accumulated," advises Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food horticulturist R,F: Gomme. "Do not scrape the snow away. Build the rink on top, so grass under the ice benefits from air in the snow." Outline the rink area by moulding snow into a ridge. Place boards or plywood on edge inside the ridge for hockey cushions. Level the snow inside the edging by dragging a shovel or toboggan over the rink area. To build the base, sprinkle water - many times for -short periods, either directly on the snow or on large plastic sheets covering the snow. A garden hose or lawn sprinkler is ideal for his job, according to Mr. Gomme. Tramp the area around the rink edges to prevent water from draining away. Patch rough spots or holes with snow, then soak with water. Clean the ice'surface before each. flooding. Once a good base is formed, keep the. ice smoth by frequently giving it a light spray. Next spring, • as' soon as the frost is out of the ground, fertilize the lawn where the rink had been. We have heard much in recent. months about the runaway costs of health care. Ontario Minister of Health, Frank Miller, warned in October that costs are increas- ing by about 16 per cent a year in this province - and that the total health bill could reach $11 billion. by 1984, approximately the figure for the whole of Canada in 1974. Much of this expenditure is on what Miller and others have :Idled "diseases of choice", In olier words, we're increasingly 4sing medical and hospital ser- -ices to treat diseases we could void in the first place. Since this is a time of year for tocktaking and new resolutions, -t's look at some of these iseases of choice and how they be avoided. Obesity - Earlier this year, a st trition. Canada survey reported .at more than hall' of all anadians are overweight. For one people - very few - the. 'oblem is not avoidable; bUt for K)st it is. Resolve to get back to )iir ideal weight through proper 'let and regular exercise. Heart Disease - The incidence heart attacks has increased by ') per cent over the past 15 years. And it's still rising. Heart ,case is the major cause of ;2atli in adults - and is largely a .iisease of choice, or lifestyle. here again, 'diet and exercise, properly conducted, is the ans- ,ror.
