Barbara Dunbar Inside Howick Central Skating in the Howick Community Centre "Anyone for a skate?" was one of the comments I heard during my visit at the Howick Community Centre. Nearly as soon as the ice was in, Miss Amos and Mr. Livermore, our physical Education teachers, were planning their skating program. The centre is rented to the school for a small amount of money. During my stay I heard Mr. Livermore mention a saying, "You must be able to take off and on skates as well on the left foot as on the right." For those who don't have skates, there are skates on sale or /students can just borrow them from the school. We must remember to put names on all equipment- brought to school. ' By Ann Gibson VOLLEYBALL Boys The boys's team from Howick defeated Grey with a final score of 4-3. This is the first game that the boys from Howick played so far in the series. By Murray Hays Girls The night before the boys', game, the girlS travelled to Grey Central Kt were not as lucky as the boys and lost 6 games to 2. The money, won, will be used to finance the class trip to Ottawa in the future. May the best float win. (Room #13's) By Murray Hays Listowel District Secondary School Concert Howick Central Junior Choir attended a concert given by the Listowel District Secondary School Choir at Central Huron Secondary School in Clinton. This concert was financed with funds realized at two music Nights held in Huron County last spring. The purpose of this concert was for enjoyment but perhaps more important to stimulate interest in choir work in the schools of Huron County. Their conductor is Mr. Gerald Fcgan, with piano accompaniment by Mrs.Marlinc Fegan. In 1972 this fantastic choir went to Ireland where they captured two first place awards. Last year they went to Toronto to sing at the Kiwanis Festival. There, they took four of the top awards. There are 110 people in this choir from grades 11, 12, 13. They practise every week. At the concert on Wednesday, December 4th, they sang many songs including "Taste of Honey", "When Age and Youth Unite" (Part 3), also "Fella from Fortune". We certainly enjoyed the privilege of hearing this group. By Michael Disley Surprise Assembly On Monday, December 2, the students of Howick Central gathered for an assembly to present academic awards not received from last year. The lucky students, achieving 5 or more A's if on their report cards last June received a crest and a point toward their school letter and a citizenship award, This award was handed out by our vice- principal, Mr. Cober, who beamed at the number of students who came forward for their awards. We hope to see as good a turnout in the 1974-75 school year. Certainly the coincidence of this surprise assembly with our first term report cards serves as a reminder. By Ann Gibson Interviews On the afternoons of Dec. 2nd, 4th, and 6th, and on the evening of Dec. 3rd, the parents of all Howick Central School students will be coming to the school for personal interviews with their childrens' teachers and to pick up their children's report cards.Mr. Robertson asked for volunteers to stay and serve coffee, help guide parents and look after the babysitting. The teachers hope this meeting will help the children solve their problems through co-operation and better understanding. By Gary Douglas White Elephant Sale On Tuesday, December 10th, at lunch hour, Miss Amos' class is going to have a rummage sale. This is another measure to raise money for our trip to Ottawa. Any students may bring in articles but they must be useable. In preparation for this we are going to make posters and put them up in the school. All students and teachers are invited!
