CNIB to study
needs of blind
A nation wide study of the
unmet needs of visually handi-
capped Canadians will be
launched immediately by the
Canadian National Institute for
the Blind. The project has just
been ratified by CNIB National
Council.
Cyril Greenland, M.Sc., Pro-
fessor, School of Social Work and
Associate, Department of
Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine,
McMaster University, Hamilton
will head the study as Project
Director. Assisting him will be a
Task Force under the Chairman-
ship of Miss L. D. Cowan,
M.S.W., Co-ordinating Consul-
tant, Social Services, CNIB.
The Task Force will consult
with blind people on a regional
basis across CNIB's eight divi-
sions from coast to coast to test
the range of services now being
offered in Canada's ten
provinces.
During the study several two-
day conferences will be held with
groups of blind service users to
determine the unmet needs
of blind Canadians are and how to
meet them. Discussions will also
be held with the relatives and
friends of blind persons, CNIB
volunteers and staff, outside
educators, rehabilitation
specialists and government
departments.
The Task. Force will also seek
information from deaf-blind per-
sons and other multiply handi-
capped groups to define their
special needs. "Every effort will
be made to focus discussions on
cotntncin themes and key issues
for both English and French
speaking. Canadians," said R.C,
Purse, CNIB Managing Director:
"Because of rapidly changing
attitudeS in today's world we now
plan to test the range and quality
of our program arid to reassess
the priorities expressed by blind
Canadians. Their unmet needs
may result from inflation, housing
shortages and Modern problems
not yet coming to our attention.
We believe that blind consumers
Of our services and the contribu-
ting public should be assured
that we are applying the Maxi=
mum resources to current
needs:" Mr. Purse said. ,

Hallowe'en Assembly
(By Erie Messen)
This year we had a great
success with our Grade 8
Assembly. Though we only had
about one and one half weeks to
practice, it was pretty good . We
got some kids jumping with
bright in spots such as our Mod
Man and Ken Marks, the
drunkard, who kept on poking
him. We had a couple of horror
jokes some pretty good monsters.
One of the top interviews was
with our Green Feed
Frankenstein, Marvin Cook. We
had quite a cast of characters
which were - our Mummy, Edwin
Haines whom we clothed in
white, Werewolf, Doug Arbuckle
the only monster which got
Mr.David Medd, the Grade 7
teacher for a prize in the
"Haunted House Talent Show".
Then we had Vampire,VVesley
Keupfer with his hair all greased
back, Joanne Edgar as. Batilda
Batty Batt. Neil Hanna the
spokesman for the Alley Cats. We
also had eight youths named;
Ralph Lubbers, Trudy Taylor,
Dianne Scott, Chris Procter, Tom
Chappel, Joanne Coultes,- Craig
Brydges and Marilyn Campbell.
We were lucky in getting some
black lights which contained gas
in them from the Brookside Public
School. We also had Gidget
Lother do some effects with these
black lights on some faces she
made and used fluorescent paint.
We also had a great Ghost
Jeff Armstrong, but most of our
assembly was based on our stage
crew, which were Paul Casemore,
Jim Scott, Fred Meurs, Wilma
and Patsy , on our sound
effects. We would never have
made it through successfully if
our teachers Mr. Stevenson and
Mr.Orr didn't give us so much of
their time and help.
