There are still many gardening
chores to do, says R.F.Gomme,
horticulturist with the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
"Mid-October until freezeup is
an ideal time to plant trees and
shrubs," he adivses. To prevent
feeder roots from being damaged
during stormy winter weather,
support new trees by attaching
them to stakes driven into the
ground.
Dry your tuberous begonias
and place them on trays or in
plastic bags for storage. Dahlias
and cannas should be air-dried
before they are stored in boxes or
bags. A cover of dried peat moss
will help retain the right amount
of moisture.
if your geraniums and coleus
are still green, take cuttings now.
Root them in sand or vermiculite
and keep them moist in a bright
but shaded location. Within a
month, they should be rooted well
enough to be transplanted into
small, individual pots. Use
well-drained potting soil and
make sure the new plants have
