In discussing the matter, Dr. Daynard says: Contrary to common opinion in North America, the recent frosts are unlikely to have stopped the development of r immature corn plants. Any temperature below 32 F will kill the leaves of corn, but significantly lower temperatures are required to kill the rest of the plant. Progressively lower temp- eratures (and lengths of exposure to these" temperatures) are re- quired to kill the upper stalk, lower stalk, and finally the ear of the plant. If only the leaves of the plant are frozen, the plants will continue to move sugars out of the stalk and into the grain for another 2 to 3 weeks. A similar phenomenon will occur if only the upper stalk is frozen as most sugars are stored in the lower stalk. Ear development can only be stoppeckompletely if both the sources. The line shown on the map designates the Northern and Southern Region only and refers to resident hunting license. In the Northern Region the license is valid from September 1 to June 15, South of the line, licenses are valid from September 20 to neighbor and keeping their own crop for grain. Both parties, and the province, could gain financially. Grain - Kernels will continue to develop for much of this period using stored stalk sugars. I would expect many fields to put on another 10 to 20 bushels per acre during this period. The fields will not yield as much as without the frost, but no one should panic and harvest them before all kernels show black layers sometime in early-to-mid-October. Lodging may be severe. Resist- ance to stalk rot can be related to sugar levels in the lower stalk and, becaUse of reduced sugar concentrations, stalk rot damage will be higher than normal. As a result, harvesting should not be delayed unnecessarily. In general; we would expect a pattern similar to 1965 when the first frost came on August 30. Our plots put on an additional 20 - 40 bu./acre after the ' frost, but by mid-October we had over 95% lodging. Silage - Because of respiration losses, total plant dry matter yield February 28. The line does not refer to migratory bird seasons in. any way. Prior to this year the province was divided into three Districts for Migratory Birds and they were known as Northern, Central and Southern Districts and dates for the different districts varied. This year the province is divided into only two Districts for Migratory Birds; Northern and. SoUthern and the line follows from Mattawa along #17 Highway to Spragge thence through the North Chan- nel to the international boundary near Cockburn Island and follows the international boundary westerly, The Migratory Bird Seasons this year "are as follows: Ducks, Wilson Snipe-Geese - Woodcock; Northern District - September 14-December 15: Southern District - September 28-December 14: Bag Limits - Ducks, 5; Geese, 5 - except that not more than 3 Canada Geese may be taken in the Counties of Essex, Lambton, Kent, Huron, Middlesex and Elgin. In some of the townships in the Southern District, there is no open season for geese and hunters should obtain and check the summary for open areas,. Bag limits - Woodcock,. 8'f' Wilson Snipe, 10. Migratory Bird season will not open before 11 a.m. E.S.T., September 28 within the Luther Marsh Wildlife .Management Area, Long Point Provincial Park, Rondeau Provincial Park and Holiday Beach. Provincial Park. Otherwise shooting hours will be one half hour before sunrise to one half hour after sunset Eastern Standard Time. A special permit is required in addition to the resident hunting license and is available only at Post Offices. A regulated township license is required in addition to the resident hunting license in the County of Perth and Hay, Ste- phen and Usborne Townships in Huron County for the hunting of pheasant, rabbit and fox. These licenses are available at the Township Clerk's office. There is tio closed season on raccoon but a hunter must have a special license to hunt raccoon, at night, and must be accompanied by a licensed dog. These licenses are available from the Ministry of Natural Resources. An open season for deer will be held throughout the Winghani District from October 28 to November 24 inclusive for Bow and Arrow. The season will be open for guns from November 11 to November 14 throughout the District except the County of Perth. Dogs are not allowed to hunt &er and only shot guns may be . used in Huron County, The Wingham District includes the Counties of Perth ; Huron, the Townships of Huron, Kinloss, Culross arid Carrick itr Bruee and the Township of Minto in Wel- lington County, There will also be an open season in Greenock Township Distr i ct: lict, borders the Wiugham lower stalk and the ear are frozen. - will drop steadily with time.
