The Brussels Post, 1974-09-18, Page 20News of Walton Mission means sensitivit Correspondent 'Mrs. Allan McCall There was a good turnout when all units met together for the United Church Women's Meeting on Wednesday evening September 18th in the church basement. Mrs. Ray Huether says played a piano prelude prior to the meeting. Mrs. William Thamer presided for the Walton Unit giving the Call to Worship. Mrs. Frank Kirkby read a poem, "Considered". Mrs, Martin Baan accompanied at the piano for singing. "Lord of all being, throned afar':. Mrs. Thamer led in prayer. The offering was received by Mrs. Ken McDonald and dedicated 'by Mrs. Thamer. Hymn "0 Master, let me Walk with Thee" closed the devotions. Mrs. Walter Bewley introduced the new study packet entitled "Mission begins with you". Mission work can be done as a World Citizen, as a community member and as part of a family. Mission is showing love to our family, sharing resources within the community, being politically aware and concerned for others, getting involved at work as a caring Christian, sharing other people's culture and responding as we travel, being sensitive to the thoughts of others as they look at our society, reaching out and sharing God's love with others in the world, and being Christians wherever we are! Interesting skits were presented by Mrs. Bill Coutts, Mrs.Torrence Dundas and Mrs. Nelson Marks on some of the do's and don'ts when visiting the lonely and ,shut-ins., Mrs. Mac Sholdice and Mrs. Emerson' Mitchell acted in the skit, telling the right way . Hymn "Where cross the crowded ways of life" closed this portion. Mrs. W. Bewley conducted the U.C.W. business. Mrs. Herb Traviss, the reco ling secretary, read the minutes f the executive meeting in Augi a. The flowers for this month are to be put in the church by the 17th and Boundary Unit. Philip Knox., Get young to involved with history, Society The Huron County Historical Society will meet in Seaforth on Monday, October 21 at 8 p.m. in the Public School. Local historian Miss Belle Campbell will speak and there will be an anti*: display at the meeting, The Society's new president, David McClure of Exeter, in a newsletter to members, asked them to remind senior citizens to donate any old photographs or documents which they no longer want to the Huron Historical Society's archives or to the County Museum in Goderich. "Many of these people have priceless photographs and articles which from our historical viewpoint are priceless but very often arc thrown out before auction sales or arc sold to persons who do not see their real value historically," Mr. McClure said. "Many of these people just need to be encouraged and would he happy to present such material to our Archives." Mr. McClure also suggested ways in which young' people can be involved in the history of the county. These included sponsor- ing a photographic contest featur- ing old buildings in the county, contests for written or tape recorded interviews with senior citizens, or Fall Fair historical projects or articles at all Fairs. Harold Turner is the retiring president of the Huron County Historical. Long-time secretary, Mrs. Amber Popp, has also retired. Mrs. Doris Batkin is the new secretary-treasurer. The next meeting of the Historical Society will be. in Dashwood on September 23, in the Community Hall. Mrs. Irvin Rader will speak on Friedsburg at Dashwood. The Huron-Perth Regional meeting was announced to be held in Egmondville October 8th. The U.C.W. will pay its share in ,the renewal for the Film Strip, and a donation was made to the Mission Band. Some of the- units will donate baking for a Bake Sale at Mrs.E. Mitchell's Display on October 19. Mrs. Allan McCall, corresponding secretary, read thank you cards from Lois Houston, Gertie Ennis, Audrey Hackwell, Annie Reid, Orvilla McCutcheon and a letter from the Mission Services of London for the clothing donated in a bale. Mrs. K. McDonald gave the treasurer's report. Each unit formed in their groups for a brief business period. Church Holds Anniversary Duff's United Church, Walton held services both morning and evening for the 109th Anniversary,. The Minist er, Rev. Derwyn Docken conducted the services , assisted by the guest speaker, Major, the Rev. G. YoumatIoff of Bayfield Anglican. Church. The choir rendered anthems, "0 God Thy Hands the Heavens Made" and "Blessed Redeemer". The special soloist was Mr. Robert Stoner of Blenheim and Londesboro who sang, "The Lord's My Shepherd" and "How Lovely are Thy Dwellings". There will be no church or Sunday School next Sunday, as is the custom for Anniversary Services at Knox Church, Moncrief, when the guest minister there will be Rev. Arthur Higgonbotham, former minister of this charge. Services at 11 A.M. and 8 P.M.
